Discomfort under right rib

I think I need reassurance, please! 20wks and developed a discomfort under my right rib a couple of hours ago. It’s a dull ache/ throb, but like a pulled muscle rather than a sharp pain. No other worrying symptoms. Spent the morning mooching around town so haven’t done anything strenuous, then admittedly spent a few hours on the sofa. Is this normal??

Around 6 months pregnant I got this awful pain under my right rib which lasted a few weeks. It was really painful but all check ups were fine, I think in the end we put it down to a foot or head lodged under my ribs. I was prescribed some painkillers which helped until baby moved again. Its worth getting checked but most likely just an awkwardly placed foot or the like

I got this, it felt like it was rib pain but it was actually acid reflux. I got prescribed Omeprazole and it mostly went away.

TTCbaby2023 · 15/01/2024 13:36

I have had the same thing since about 20 weeks as well. It feels like a pulled muscle and gets better if I lift my arm to stretch the area. It comes and goes but can be quite uncomfortable. I am now 30 weeks and it still there. No one has been able to tell me what it is...

Thanks all. I was close to ringing the midwife as the pain then migrated into my back but stopped after I had a paracetamol. So strange! It went on for about 3 and a half hours so nothing like what you’re enduring @TTCbaby2023

@BananasInThreePieceSuits haha the amount of little discomforts I’ve had have all been credited as acid reflux!

@Pippinpops85 I kept massaging into the area of pain thinking it might be baby moving about. I don’t think I’ve been aware of any movement yet though so couldn’t imagine a little foot causing that but it could well have been 😂

It could be a bunch of things, including the baby kicking/punching, indigestion, gas

But right-sided pain under the ribs is a pre-eclampsia symptom so you need to get checked. Call the midwife tomorrow. Pre-eclampsia can occur this early, and while it's much more likely its something totally innocuous, better to be on the safe side.

My first gall bladder attack happened during pregnancy.

TTCbaby2023 · 16/01/2024 10:12

@Passthefleece My pain seems quite superficial as I can massage the skin and feel it. It gets better after a little bit of massage and then comes back. And sometimes I have also have it on my back. Last night was horrendous as it kept bothering me. I mentioned it to the midwife a while ago and she could not think of anything it could be. I will mention it again at my next appointment.

BananasInThreePieceSuits · 16/01/2024 12:53

Yes, @XenaTheWarriorPrincess is right. That’s why I was worried as I had had preeclampsia in my first pregnancy (though no rib pain then, and thankfully didn’t get preeclampsia in my second).

Pain right side under rib
Pain started at 30 weeks. I am now 31 weeks + 4.
Pain when not full blown feel very localised and burning sensation. Sore to touch like sunburn.
When I move to much for example just made a curry tonight pain went from 0-7 in no time. Its sharp and doesn't go away with lying down or paracetamol. It's now been 1hr 30 lying down and pain is coming and going sharp to dull and then sharp stab again.
At 30 weeks after 1 day and night with pain I went to hospital and was checked. Everything was normal and no protein in urine. They took my bloods and sent me home.
I'm stressed because now was the time I planned to make home really ready because I started my Mat leave and I can do nothing.
What should I do?

@Passthefleece Get it checked for preeclampsia, but (fwiw) I've had a pain like that for the past two years because my core strength is awful/non-existent. It gets worse when I slouch, and I've had a fair few flare up recently given I can only take paracetamol because of baby. 🙃

SUZSORTED · 09/04/2025 12:43

I am going to the g.p at 16:15. The pain was really bad in the night and is still hurting now. Paracetamol hasn't done anything for the pain.

SUZSORTED · 09/04/2025 18:50

I went to g.p my obs were all normal.
They said I have nitrate, white blood cells and protein in my wee. They gave me anti biotic but I don't have any uti symptoms other than this stabbing pain.
I'm meeting the midwife on Friday so see what she also says.
