waters broke at 20 weeks - is there hope?

I'm asking this for my dear friend. She's suffered 2 miscarrieages recently & finally got pg again. Now her waters have broken. She's just 20 weeks. She just called me from the hospital, where they're keeping her in indefinitely. Does anyone know how much hope there is for the baby (she said there's very little amniotic fluid left, they're gonna scan again on Friday. There was still a heartbeat yesterday. I feel so sad for her. this has been such a struggle. It would be heartbreaking for her to loose this one as well. Is there any advice? Any words of wisdom? now she's terrified she's gonna loose her baby, confinerd to bed, won't be able to spend Christmas at home with her dh & ds

There is hope, A friend was in hospital after her waters went, was there for weeks, unfortunately went into labour around 26 weeks, but baby seems ok now (almost 1yo).

I hate to say it, but it doesn't sound good. I think sometimes if it is a small leak it can seal up again and be ok, but if there isn't much fluid left that seems a bad sign

there is always hope she will require bed rest and to be watched for signs of labour starting one day at a time at least she is in the right place and hopefully it will all work out right
good luck to her will keep fingers crossed it all goes right

This happened to a friend of mine at 22 wks, unfortunately there was no heartbeat the next day.
However, she did go on to have another baby and all was fine with that one.
It is so sad though.

Thinking of your friend, ernest. I'm sorry to say that this happened to a dear friend earlier this year and their little daughter didn't survive. Circumstances do differ, though, so I have every finger crossed for them all.

i thought i read that the membranes can repair and replenish the fluid - or maybe i was hallucinating. I hope your friend is ok and her baby

That can happen, jampot, which is why I was initially optimistic for my friends and their baby. But if the amniotic fluid is almost all gone, then it's unlikely to replenish itself, they were told. Really hope ernest's friends are luckier. Mine are facing a grim Christmas and my heart goes out to them.

Just spoke to her again. Waters broke Monday morning. She says they monitored baby last night & it still seemed ok (sorry - hate using 'it' but she doesn't know yet what gender) but still little fluid. she sounds very sad & very brave. heard they can't give drugs to stop labour this eartly on. what age is it now for baby's chance of survival any one know - 24 weeks?

yes 24 weeks. I really hope it all goes ok for her it must be awful. But then did you see those twins on the news yesterday - i think they were born at 20 weeks, weighed about 9oz each and could fit in the palm of your hand! they are doing well - shows that it is possible

This happened to SIL's daughter at about 23 weeks. She spent the rest of the pregnancy in hospital and delivered early. Little boy does have some problems but possibly a result of prematurity rather than lack of fluid. Amazing story as she conceived whilst being treated for leukaemia and the treatment should have made her infertile (she'd even had eggs removed for possible future conception).
So it can work out and hope this will be the case for your friend.

I thought I'd better let you know that sadly my friend gave birth yesterday to a beautiful little girl, who was still born. She started having contractions in the night & delivered around noon. She found out before the delivery that her baby had died.

We had been feeling hopeful because she'd gone for over a week from the waters breaking. We'd kind of hoped that if the worst was to happen, it would do so sooner rather than later.

She is the sweetest, most dignified kindest person i know and for this to happen, right at Christmas too, is just too cruel. I can hardly bear it, so God only knows the grief and pain she must be feeling. Thank you all for your kind messages.
