I am around 4-5 weeks pregnant and since I found out 2 weeks ago keep forgetting I need to change what I eat! So far I have eaten sushi, gorgonzola and prawns (though some people say these are OK to eat?). I also drank 5 units of wine last week. I have resolved to do better from now on but am paranoid I have already turned my baby into a four-headed alien. Any thoughts/reassurance out there??

tentative lol... >scared of expats pregnancy hormones

Planned? Surprise???

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 21:55

that's what my plan is.

i just don't want to see anything or hear anything at all until i am out of that corridor full of pregnant women.

Toothache · 21/03/2008 21:56

okay... need to read the OP.... coz it seems my "thread crash" maybe a bit off topic.

Toothache · 21/03/2008 22:02

k... I ate tuna once a week on a baked tattie through my pregnancy... thought I was within guidelines lol!

I think some things about food are a TAD OTT. I still ate sunny side up fried eggs for example. Figured that the likelyhood of salmonella was minute!
Although pate with its liver content could damage the baby.

I confess... I found out I was pg with dd by sheer accident 5 days BEFORE my period was due..... did a pg test drunk one night as a joke. I remember clearly posting this on MN that night!!!

I still went on my scheduled night out the next night and drank. Figured it would be my last for a while and anyway... who the hell finds out they're pregnant 9 days after conception??????

Complete abstinence after that (mainly due to heartburn).

But to keep forgetting your pg.... that actually made me larf a bit.

i think tuna is fine a couple of times a week, toothache. the gist is that because it's a big fish hanging around in a big dirty ocean for so long that it absorbs loads more yuck than smaller fish. heavy metals, freddie mercury, zz top, that sort of thing etc... i think the guideline is supposed to warn people who have a baked pot with tuna every day in the works canteen, that sort of thing.

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 22:24

whew!

i do like tuna every now and again.

in a salad on a jacket tattie. tossed with pasta and garlic, lemon juice, black olives, fresh tomatoes, olive oil and cracked black pepper as a refreshing dinner. baked into a casserole with macaroni, cream of mushroom soup and peas and topped with breadcrumbs. on a crusty pizza base. with artichokes and olives and a light marinara sauce.

lissielouwithbunnyears · 21/03/2008 22:25

Toothache · 21/03/2008 22:25

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 22:35

i'm already planning all the food i'm going to eat once it's born.

Toothache · 21/03/2008 22:36

pmsl expat. this is your 2nd right?

lissielouwithbunnyears · 21/03/2008 22:38

when i was pg with ds i couldnt eat meat, but in particular pork. as soon as i came out of hospital i drank real coffee and ate 4 pork chops in a row, washed down with an egg custard!

Aitch · 21/03/2008 22:42

my sister btought tuna tekka maki sushi rolls to the hospital. now THAT is bliss.

lissielouwithbunnyears · 21/03/2008 22:43

lol

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 22:46

oooo, can i adopt your sister, aitch? for a bit?

no, toothy, this is my 3rd. i have two daughters, teh younger of whom has a tummy bug and the runs just now.

always pleasant when you're nauseous already.

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 22:47

DH brought me hot chicken madras from Kebab Mahal and an ice cold bottle of Cobra for dinner after i had DD2 and she's had her first feed.

fishie · 21/03/2008 22:47

after ds cs i wolfed a hospital canteen tuna salad sandwich in the recovery room. that really was a mistake.

Heathcliffscathy · 21/03/2008 22:49

do any of you screaming shitheads (nice) recognise that guidelines are written (in the large part by men) for the absolute lowest common denominator.

oooo, women, they are thick as pigshit, lets ban everything as they just don't understand moderation.

misconceptions should be compulsory reading on this and many other pregnancy and birth matters imo. naomi wolf doth rock in this respect.

Heathcliffscathy · 21/03/2008 22:49

expat....congrats!

Aitch · 21/03/2008 22:49

got to say, i really rate my maternity hospital but the food is SHITE. i am a greedy, greedy woman but i couldn't eat anything but the toast they offered. best toast in the world, right enough.

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 22:51

i ate a hospital sandwich after giving birth to DD1, fishie. that was my big mistake.

it did not stay down long.

aside - soph, have i ever told you how much i want to give that moany, smug, overrated Naomi Wolf a Glasgow kiss?

well, i'll tell you now then .

expatinscotland · 21/03/2008 22:52

even DH couldn't eat the food they gave me in hospital, and that is saying much.

i brought all my own food in or had it delivered - yes, there are plenty of takeaways around ERI who will deliver if someone meets them at the doors to Simpson's.

Heathcliffscathy · 21/03/2008 22:52

have tyou read it? have you? have you have you????

she is gorgeously challenging. she is fantastic on eating pate in pregnancy. i'd haul my arse upstairs and get the book out and quote it if i could be ARSED!

madamez · 21/03/2008 22:53

When I had DS, farking hospital forgot to feed me for most of the next day. Having had nothing but an apple and a cheapo muesli bar (which were at the bottom of my hospital bag) since about 10pm the night DS was born, I ended up sobbing at the nice ward nurse who made me tea and toast at about 4pm.

Aitch · 21/03/2008 22:53

i think we all understand that, soph. all of it has to be written for the lowest common denominator, doesn't it? you mean HVs, don't you?

Heathcliffscathy · 21/03/2008 22:53
