12 week bleeding

Hi all,
On Wednesday I woke up in the middle of the night for a wee and suddenly the toilet bowl was filled with red blood. Red bleeding continued till morning and I booked a private scan(couldn’t bother with epu and they didn’t had available scan till Monday!!)
anyway bleeding continued and become heavy till we arrived for our scan. Both babies were well, measured couple of days ahead with strong heartbeats. Sonographer seemed completely unfazed with the bleeding, didn’t refer me to hospital and said that I might experience more bleeding as she could see it was near the cervix, but nothing to worry about?!?
Anyway, we left so happy that babies are healthy and cervix closed, although can’t stop worrying as since then I do have brown spotting(only when whipping) but it’s heavier in the mornings. It’s been 4 days like that and honestly don’t know what to think about it.
I have my 12week scan on Thursday so thought to wait till then?

did anyone else experienced anything similar? Any advice or stories are welcome🫶🏻

Personally I would contact your local epu again and explain the situation. With heavy bleeding a triage unit may be able to see you earlier . I had some bleeding within the first 12 weeks and was told I could phone any time to be checked and reassured and not to hold off.

CB2805 · 07/01/2024 13:00

@Hiddenvoice thanks I did got in touch with them after my scan. The lady over the phone told me to come in to have a cervical examination(which I’m not very fond of) when I said that I already had a private scan she said ‘’well there is not much what we can do then, there are no scans till Monday, Tuesday’’
Which completely took me off.

That’s upsetting they didn’t offer more. I had to wait until 6 weeks for a scan the first time I had bleeding but the second time I was told I could go straight to triage and they would monitor the baby’s heartbeat and check me over.
I would contact your midwife and even phone epu back and see if you can get a scan on Monday. I wouldn’t hold off until Thursday if you’re still bleeding. Have you had any pain?

FloofCloud · 07/01/2024 13:18

Bleeding is common in pregnancies. Speak to the sonographer this week and see if you can see the consultant too for some reassurance. Brian blood is just old blood and it goes black when older still. FWIW my first child, I had heavy bleeding and clots for about 5-6 weeks after 12 week scan, dr scanned and said she's fine so I'm not worried ... she's 15 now and perfect 😍

CB2805 · 07/01/2024 13:20

@Hiddenvoice im not even sure how to get in touch with my midwife(I changed maternity care after my first appointment), any advice on that?
No pain, no cramps just a constant brown spotting when I wipe which makes me very anxious. I will try to get in touch with epu again hopefully they will book me scan🤞

@FloofCloud oh that’s so reassuring to hear. It’s so scary but honestly I hope I’m one of those who bleed. I don’t have any pain so hopefully brown spotting will stop soon🤞
wow 5-6 weeks with bleeding? God bless you I bet you were so worried. Did they ever find out the cause of the bleed?

I’m not too sure actually! I had to phone my gp to get the number for the community midwife team. When I was assigned someone I was given her direct mobile number to contact instead of going through the main reception.
Do you know the local community midwife phone line to contact? Or do you have the badger app?

My bleeding started off red and then brown . It happen twice over a few weeks and they couldn’t find any reasons for it other than saying my cervix might be irritated. I’m now in my third trimester and everything’s been fine since so hopefully it eases up for you!

CB2805 · 07/01/2024 14:02

@Hiddenvoice i do have the app but I can’t find any contact details for anyone which is so frustrating.
exactly my case red blood which turned to brown spotting. I wouldn’t worry much if it wasn’t constant for the last 4 days.
how long did your bleeds/ brown lasted for?

OP posts:
Hiddenvoice · 07/01/2024 14:46

Mine lasted week 5 to week 6. Stopped the day before epu scanned me and then started again at week 8 until week 9. I had a private scan but they couldn’t find any reason either and said the baby had a strong heartbeat. I spoke to my midwife who told me to monitor it since it turned brown but to phone triage if it became heavy, red or I had any cramping.

LM88 · 07/01/2024 17:24

I would contact them again because you can get medication, I went in with bleeding and was referred from EPU to maternity triage who gave me cyclogest pessaries. Baby was fine but obviously something “wasnt” with the bleeding.

Dinosaurus86 · 07/01/2024 17:42

I think it’s probably ok if your private scan was good. I had a moderate bleed at 10 weeks and fortunately managed to get a scan at EPU - baby doing fine but they found a subchorionic haematoma. Sounds like that might be what you have? They don’t normally threaten the baby at this point. I had a truly horrific bleed at 11 weeks, over the weekend, two days before my 12 week scan. Was terrified but 12 week scan all ok. This was last week and I’m still getting spotting. They said not to worry about that but to go in with any new fresh bleeds.

I was beyond crazed at one point and went to GP who said she'd try to find the heartbeat with Doppler which thankfully she did so that reassured me ... not sure what it was, but the obstetrician who was a miscarriage expert, just said lots of people bleed in pregnancy and it's 50% fine, lots more if you then scan and the baby is fine - that's all she was concerned about and didn't need to see me again so that reassured me - good luck and I hope you send us a picture of your baby in 28 short weeks from now 🥰

BurningBenches · 07/01/2024 18:20

I had a huge bleed at my 12wk scan. I had had my NhS 12wk the day before and they had been unable to get nuchal measurements so basically said my options were go private or have a quad test at 16wks.
I opted to go private as I was 41. I went alone as it was lockdown and we had no childcare.
Whilst being scanned at the private clinic I felt something go like I had wet myself, felt mortified like how am I going to explain this when I stand up. The Dr suggested I go for a wee as my bladder was full and as I stood she said “you’re bleeding” I’d bled through my clothes and onto the bed. I went to the bathroom and passed a huge clot, I honestly thought that was it.
went back into the room and she continued to scan, baby was totally fine and unfazed.

The dr was lovely, said it was likely a subchrionic haematoma and offered to rescan me 4 days later for free to reassure me.

I rang the MW when I got home. Their response was go to A&E if the bleeding gets worse or you’re in pain, otherwise we will see you at your 16wk phone appointment.

I am so thankful for the private clinic, I went back at the end of the week. Baby was fine. I had 2 small subchrionic haematoma. Red blood lasted about a week. Brown blood continued for over a month.

There was no sign of it at my 20wk scan. Baby is now 2.5

CB2805 · 07/01/2024 23:03

@LM88 thanks for the advise, I’m already on progesterone as it’s an IVF pregnancy🫶🏻

@Dinosaurus86 thanks for sharing. I did had a hematoma at 7weeks which caused spotting back then. On scan they could still see it but they said is an “old” bleed? Not sure what that means. Although she mentioned that the bleed that could see now is near the cervix which will cause more blood, but she never said what that bleed is. I hope I will find more answers on my 12week scan in 4days🤞

@BurningBenches thanks for sharing your story. My first bleed was pretty much the same like yours. I really really hope everything turns out well. By this point I believe I have another heamatoma.

Hi @CB2805
I know this is an old thread, but I'm in a similar position and I wondered how your scan went? I hope all was OK for you 🙏🏼
I'm 11+6 today and have had brown spotting since week 4 due to 2 subchorionic heamatomas. This morning I had a heavy red bleed that filled the bowl, it's an IVF pregnancy and we've had 5 prior miscarriages but none this far along. Our last loss started with a red bleed then changed to brown spotting same as today.
Really panicking and 12 week scan isn't until Monday!

Dinosaurus86 · 05/10/2024 09:23

Hi @VioletCookie, not the OP but got a notification as I commented on this thread previously. For me, this turned out ok but I did have scary episodes of bleeding right through to nearly 20 weeks and spotting didn’t end until about 22 weeks. I was prepared for a loss by EPU at 14 weeks because of the sheer size of the haematoma. But we did make it through. My waters went early which I’m sure was related but fortunately I had just made it to 36 weeks.

I do hope it is ok for you too.

fwiw it’s not always recommended (though actually was to me by one dr) but I put myself on near enough bed rest through those weeks. I didn’t go to work, was told to limit stairs, and didn’t lift my toddler (not easy! The time I tried to go back to work, I had another big bleed. My haematoma was huge and right above the cervix, so concern was it would irritate it and open).

VioletCookie · 06/10/2024 09:40

Hi @Dinosaurus86 thanks for coming back to me and I'm glad it worked out OK for you, albeit water breaking early must have been scary.

I'm bleeding bright red and a lot heavier than spotting (filling the toilet) with red stringy bits (sorry) then it changes to dark brown/black then back to red again.

The heamatoma looked a lot smaller on the last scan so I'm surprised there's so much blood, which is leading me to think this is another miscarriage.

Our dating scan is tomorrow, so we'll know in the afternoon either which way

Dinosaurus86 · 06/10/2024 12:11

I have everything crossed for you @VioletCookie. I had terrible amounts of bleeding - puddles on the floor etc, and all colours, but I know I was perilously close to loss, and extremely lucky. My haematoma was (iirc) about 2 or 3 cm when I was first scanned at 10 weeks, and it had gone up to about 5cm at the 12 week scan (I had another huge bleed two days before). Then it was something like 10cm long (and also v wide) at 14 weeks after another huge bleed, and stayed like that at least until 17 weeks when I had another scan. By 20 weeks it was down to 3 or 4 cm. So I think the size can really jump around.

I don’t want to give false hope though. I was fully aware throughout that it could go either way. I also never had clots, but I know people with SCHs who did.
