Ante natal care Gran Canaria - has anyone had experience / is this normal?

I am 35 years old, 17 weeks into first pregnancy and living in Gran Canaria.

I am a bit worried about the scans etc that I have been offered on the state but we cannot afford to go private.

I had blood tests and first scan at 12/13 weeks. They also took blood to decide if I should have amniocentisis, but this was 4 weeks ago and I've not heard anything. Hopefully that means I was low risk.

However my next scan isn't scheduled until June and the only contact between now and then are more blood test in April.

As there are lots of healthy mums with small children running around the island then I know that the state care must be fine, I guess I am after some reassurance.

The only person I know that has recently had a baby went private and so wasn't much help when I asked her.

Don't know about Gran Canaria but I'm in Andalucia and 35 weeks and have found state care fine. Had first scan at 14 weeks, second at 21 and have had the most recent at 34. Will be having last scan on due date if he hasn't turned up by then. Saw either gynae for a scan or the midwife every month, so saw someone every month. Alternating roughly between them. Had bloods done at about 8 weeks and then at about 24 weeks I think.

A friend of mine didn't realise/wasn't told that she should see the midwife (matrona) every other month, as well as the obgyn. So she only saw the obgyn at the scans. Then at about 7 months IIRC she went to midwife, who was a bit shocked she hadn't been before!

If you think this might be the case for you, can you call your health centre and sort out a midwife appointment?

This is in Galicia btw.

I was planning to make another appointment with the matrona and take DH along as his Spanish is more up to the job than mine.
