I went to the GP this morning for suspected shingles, and thought it wise to do a pregnancy test beforehand seeing as DH and I have been trying. Lo and behold there was a faint line (most unexpected after nearly a year of trying).

The GP has prescribed anti-virals (aciclovir) five times a day for a week. She said it's fine in pregnancy (the pharmacist also said this) but I cannot help worrying! Has anyone else taken it this early on in a pregnancy and the baby has been fine??

The shingles is apparently mild but she said I risk neuralgia if I don't take it.
Looking for any experience of this, thank you!!

From what I've read shingles isn't going to affect your pregnancy and the antivirals are safe to take

If you can’t trust your GP, etc, are you going to trust your midwife and consultant?

if the gp has said they are ok I wouldn’t question it

Just to add as they've said the antivirals are safe - my ddad had shingles & the antivirals and even though q old he was fine very quickly. DGDad didn't and suffered long term effects - only anecdotal and an age difference but I'd take them like a shot & really really take care of yourself until you're recovered.

Congratulations btw xx

I took antivirals during my first pregnancy and everything was fine! ☺️

Thanks very much everyone for your replies. It's reassuring to hear from others. I've decided to take it as the joint point is getting worse and I don't want it to get unbearable.

I've taken antivirals for herpes during pregnancy and all was fine, a Dr wouldn't prescribe anything unsafe for baby.
