Hi,

Just a quickie - I'm just getting my hospital bag ready, and I've heard that you need to wash new baby clothes before putting them on the baby? Is this the case? I'm just wondering whether to wash the new sleepsuits before packing them.

hi bluebella
i don't know if you are supposed to or not, but i think that a lot of people do, just to soften them up a bit and freshen them up too!!!
Not sure about anybody else, but this urge wore off for me after a few months and my second child just wears everything out of the packet!!!
good luck
xx

I was brought up to wash everything before it gets worn - they put a finish on fabric to help prevent mildew, stains and wrinkles. The finish can include a range of chemicals. Formaldehyde is a common one. As a volatile organic compound and suspected carcinogen it isn't the best thing for anyones skin, especially a new born baby's!

I agree with Tangle! I wash everything plus if your bits are not in a sealed bag your outfits could have been lying anywhere and touched by anyone - bleugh!

I have washed everything - it really isn't that much of a pain! Just want to know my baby is in clean clothes washed by me!

washed everything to start with and still wash things that aren't in packets. draw the line at any kind of baby-related ironing, though!

We washed everything, there are alot of chemicals used in the manufacturing process of clothes and packaging etc.

I loved washing ds's teeny tiny vests and baby gros - made me cry seeing them all hanging on the washing line - hormones!1!

He's 10 months now - the novelty has worn off!
