How and when did your waters break?

As I’m nearing the end of the third trimester with my second I’m wondering if/when my waters might go. So just for fun when did yours go? And was it a big flood or just a bit?

With my first I went to the toilet in the night (38 weeks) and felt a little pop and when I wiped realised a small trickle wasn’t stopping so it must be my waters! It stayed a small trickle continuously until the baby came.

DC1 on the toilet 24 hours before I gave birth.
DC2 while pushing with a bang.

MushroomQueen · 03/01/2024 14:32

I had my waters broken for all 3 of mine, 9cm/10cm ready to push and waters had to be broken. So I've never experienced it naturally it's interesting to read other's experiences

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 03/01/2024 15:21

I was already in hospital and they went while I was sitting on the bed. It felt like a balloon inside me popped and it was a BIG gush😂

tulipsunday · 03/01/2024 16:16

Big gush which woke me up. Flooded the bed. Mild contractions started soon after. Awaiting start of labour of second child so be interesting to see what happens this time.

LorlieS · 03/01/2024 16:19

They partially went about 3 days before contractions started.

YellowWiggle · 03/01/2024 16:29

first - felt a tiny trickle whilst laying in bed (it was 5am), got up to go for a wee and after a few steps there was huge puddle on the floor!

second - waters had to be broken by the doctor after about 12 hours or labour (i think i was about 7cm). they invited the students to observe and the doctor was struggling to burst them, and said they were the toughest waters he’d come across 🤣 then there was the hugest flood and I had a huge wave of emotion (and disgust as it was so undignified) and burst into tears!! it wasnt painful just an awful experience with a load of students gawping at me.

Fadtwtat · 03/01/2024 16:35

Never spontaneously. Went overdue full 2 weeks with all of my kids.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/01/2024 16:44

DS1- at 36 weeks 6 days with no ensuing labour, so had to be induced but they waited a day as there wasn’t any space in NCU. It was the middle of the night, I turned over in bed and there was a gush. I prodded DH, said ‘I think my waters have broken’ and he said ‘no they haven’t’. 🙄

DS2 - at 38 weeks 4 days in the hospital car park as I got out of the car. Thought I was in early labour but he was born 45 mins later!

RuthW · 03/01/2024 16:51

Big flood just as i was getting in my car to take my mum out for a meal at 37 weeks.

NameChangerGameChanger2 · 03/01/2024 16:55

Pregnancy one - only about ten minutes before I gave birth, after about ten hours in labour.

Pregnancy two - began leaking as I served DS1 his dinner, leaked off and on all evening. Went to hospital around midnight to be checked, labour itself started a couple of hours later, and I gave birth in just two hours with no pain relief! I loved my second labour!

FranklyADick · 03/01/2024 17:02

With 1st I had caesarean without Labour so assume they were broken during the procedure. With 2nd they burst over living room rug at teatime while I was running around after my then 4 year old. Still didn't go into labour so baby was born by caesarean next morning.

jellyfish2 · 03/01/2024 19:58

Mine was one of the movie scene waters breaking! It was in my house thankfully at exactly 37 weeks. Woke up to the feeling of a big whoosh and ran to the toilet. The amount of water was unbelievable and it just kept coming!

They were broken by the midwife with a pointy stick both times.

Oooh do they actually use a pointy stick? I’m being induced Friday and curious about how they’ll break my waters.

LorlieS · 03/01/2024 20:10

@ActDottie It almost ended in disaster when they artificially broke my son's waters 😞 My advice would be to wait for them to go naturally if you can. You don't have to have anyone break them.

babbaganoush · 03/01/2024 20:17

First baby: waters went with a pop around 3 hours after regular contractions started, it felt like a big relief. Baby arrived 9 hours later.

Second baby: I'd been having mild tightenings for about 2 hours but totally manageable, didn't really think I was in labour. Sat up in bed to get up to the loo and my waters went with a big gush. Things very quickly ramped up after that and baby arrived 45 minutes later (luckily a planned homebirth!)

Wheeeeee · 03/01/2024 20:18

I don't know! I know they were intact when I was admitted to the MLU as the midwife who examined me said so. DS was born 90 minutes later and I haven't the foggiest when my waters went as the whole thing was so intense I was completely out of my tree. For some reason it bugs me that I don't know 😅

Lastminutebride · 03/01/2024 20:23

First time they were broken by the midwife in labour
second time my waters were leaking from 26 weeks. An on/off trickle until she was born. I’m guessing they’d have broke my waters fully during the C-section.

GrouchyKiwi · 03/01/2024 20:26

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2024 00:09

All three times the waters went as I was pushing the baby out.

Same for me, and all three born on their due date.

morebiscuitslessinequality · 19/01/2025 19:28

my first - I was just getting out the car for the hospital and mine broke as I stepped out the car, baby was born 20 minutes later.

my second - I was in labour in the labour ward and it was again 15 minutes before baby was born.

Both were a good gush / amount of waters, mostly all over myself or my husbands shoes which made me laugh given the fact he wore his favourite shoes to the labour ward 😂

Mummer123 · 19/01/2025 19:30

Mine was exactly like on tv - nothing and then a massive gush out of nowhere. Woke up at 4.30 at 38 weeks with my bed (and husband) soaked!

ClearHoldBuild · 19/01/2025 19:44

Mine were broken by the midwife whilst I was in labour both times. Once I was nearly 10cm they broke them. They waited for a contraction so I didn’t feel it.

FortWalton · 19/01/2025 19:56

Both times my waters were broken as I was ready to push.

sel2223 · 20/01/2025 09:43

Not me as i had an ELCS but when my mum was pregnant with me, they went in full dramatic fashion as she was in the hospital waiting room waiting to see the midwife at 38 weeks. She stood up and there was a massive gush 😅

..... it didn't lead to a quick labour for her though, she had to be induced

Coconutter24 · 20/01/2025 10:54

The midwife had to break mine with both my labours as they didn’t break themselves

SingingSands · 20/01/2025 12:23

With my first they popped a couple of hours before I gave birth, whilst I was on the labour ward. I was climbing onto the hospital bed and it was like a movie scene, a real flood - they hit the floor and then splashed back up onto me! I was completely soaked and had to change into a hospital gown!

Second time they went just moments before baby was born - I remember midwife saying if they had gone in the car then he'd have been born in the car (DS was born 15 mins after we arrived at hospital!).
