Hi! I’m 17 weeks pregnant and been very unwell with flu. At a Dr appointment today the Dr could not hear the heartbeat but said they were able to hear movement. I also have an anterior placenta. Have any one experienced this? Naturally feeling worried about not hearing the heartbeat! Thanks

Was this a GP? I was once told you can’t ‘hear’ movement. A lot of the time it’s your stomach, GI tract, your own blood swooshing about. Again, this might be incorrect advice. Are you not feeling the baby move yet? I’d honestly go into your maternity ED, I’d also be worried!

how on earth was it left with the doctor?? he just waved you goodbye?

are you very overweight?

You can hear movements however it’s not a reliable method of determining viability.

GP’s should not really be listening in to fetal hearts, they aren’t specialised in this skill and auscultation at 17 weeks is quite difficult due to the size of the fetus.

How has it been left? I would contact your community midwife to see if you could tag on to a clinic tomorrow for a listen in or contact triage and explain this to them and ask them to listen in for reassurance if you are concerned.

I’d contact your MW asap.

I agree about the fact doctors aren’t the best to ‘listen’ to the heartbeat. And tbh in such a case, I’d have expected them to send you for an emergency scan.

Definately contact triage and go in
