Can I really be out by around 8 days? Empty sac - most likely bligted ovum?

Hi.

My first positive test was on the 5.12. I had some brown spotting and pain so was scanned at EPU on 16th. Nothing but thickened lining was seen. My hcg was checked and was 655. In 48 hrs it was 1180.

Was scanned today and a small gestational sac was seen, not sure of the mean size, according to google its an average of width, height and length - something like 8x9x14 so guessing 10mm or less. The sonographer said she wouldn't expect to see yolk sac with this size and said I would be around 5, 5+3 weeks. She called the sac tiny so maybe I somehow miscalculated the size as google suggests yolk should be visible at around 10mm.

Regardless, did anyone have this? Even when I push my dates by as much as I can reasonably do, according to the bfp I must be at least 6+2 to 6+4.

I am interested if anyone had the same and it wasn't blighted ovum.

Hi, not exactly the same but some similarities with me. Tested positive on 20th Nov at 11DPO. Started spotting the following day and it carried on for a week so had the HCG repeat bloods done a few times. My EPU wouldn’t scan until HCG was over 1500 so I was scanned Friday 8th Dec when I think I was 6+1 (pretty sure on dates as I was using OPKs, temping and we only DTD twice). Only a sac which she said was around 5 and a half weeks so about 5 days out. Had to wait 2 weeks for a rescan.

Had a scan on Friday and baby was there with a heartbeat measuring 7+6 so only 2 days behind my dates now. Really hope you have a positive outcome too, do you have a follow up scan booked?

My first I got my positive the day my period was due, at my 12 week scan I was only measuring 10 weeks, which would have put conception at the same time as I got my positive, which is obviously not possible. Shes now 12 years old. Still have no explanation of how she was 2 weeks behind and she never caught up.

Thank you for replying.

I have a follow up scan with the EPU on 9th but booked a private scan on the 30th to see if there is any progression. I feel nauseous but I know that you very well can with blighted ovum.

Have a scan in a few hours. Just had my first proper sickness today as well. I really hope I am not experiencing all these for an empty sac:)

I think it's a good idea to have booked another scan. I wouldnt have wanted to wait to the 9th either. Hope it's good news for you op x

Thriving30 · 30/12/2023 10:45

It could just be you took longer to implant and nothing else can be seen because your HCG hasn't risen enough yet.
Hope all goes well for you today x

MrsB25 · 30/12/2023 12:06

Good luck! Hoping for a positive outcome for you.

So there is now a yolk sac together with the gestational sac. 4 days after the gestational sac only scan is apparently what you would expect.

They booked me for a rescan on the 6th. It feels weird to be out by so many days when I had a positive test on the 6th.

Just updating the thread for people who come across it in the future.

Just had another private scan as we didn't see a fetal pole and there is still only a gestational sac and a yolk sac. Most likely anembryonic pregnancy. Have the EPU scan on Tuesday so hopefully they will give me something to move it along.

Sorry to hear this op. Take care of yourself.

MrsB25 · 08/01/2024 19:02

Really sorry to hear this, I hope everything goes smoothly with the next stage and you are doing ok x

It's not great but there are worse things happening to people around the world so I am trying to look at this that way. Going to EPU tomorrow, hoping they will give me medicine so I can start the process over the weekend. Have baby swimming etc throughout the week.
