Did you have an antenatal health visitor?

Hi,

Just wondering why some people have antenatal health visits but not others? Is it just dependant on trust/area you live in? A few friends of mine never got one so I'm not sure whether to expect it or not! Or if it's a recent change to move away from antenatal health visits?

Thanks

Some people will be offered a targeted antenatal visit for a few reason, mental health problems, domestic violence, previous child protection, being a very young mum (21 or under) as a few examples.

Hi I'm a HV (dons hard hat). We do antenatal visits where we can, primarily for first time mums or maybe those who have other needs (safeguarding, maybe they've had a poorly child before or they've been poorly etc - not saying this is you). Sometimes when we are short staffed we don't get to do them. It helps us see if there is are any other needs as well and help get additional support if needed.

We just go over infant feeding, safe sleep, emotional health, outline our role etc it makes the birth visit a bit quicker as we've gone through a lot already and you get to know us.

I know we get a bad reputation, but I love my job and have a really good relationship with my caseload.

I think the antenatal visit is very much dependent on area as well.

I was supposed to with my first, but baby came earlier than anticipated.

Yes. I was a first time single mum, although in my 40s with a career and home, and not 'vulnerable' in any way.

We didn't get on, and were each glad to see the back of the other. But it was good of the local trust to offer.

It really depends on the geographical area and how the service is commissioned. Some areas are not resourced to be able to provide this contact; some have to target visits.

I didn't with my first (living child) despite having mental health input in pregnancy. But did with my second even though by then I wasn't needing any support mental health or otherwise. No idea why!

My area offers them to all FTMs. But I went to them rather than them coming to my home. I know of friends who have had the HV come to their house. I found the appointment quite useful personally.
