Heavy Bleeding - But Not Miscarried

Hello,

I recently got pregnant with IVF and it’s been such a horrible rollercoaster. I bled for 3 weeks at the beginning so I went in for an early scan at 7 weeks. There was a heart beat but it was measuring 8 days too small and the yoke was huge - both of which suggested it was a failing pregnancy and we were told to prepare for miscarriage.

Two days later, I wake up to a lot of
blood and I then passed what I can only describe as a blood pancake with lumps in it - it was huge - about 9cm. Understandably, I was convinced this was my miscarriage.

I went in for a scan a few days later to confirm everything had gone. To our shock, baby was still there, with a really strong heart beat and it had caught up, now only 4 days behind and the yoke was a normal size… I then went on to have another rush of blood that evening with small clots that lasted a minute or so, and then it completely stopped.

it’s been a very emotional journey, especially as my last pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks and I really just want to know what is going on.

I wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar or had any idea what the blood pancake was or what all this bleeding is.

I was taking cyclogest, but since I thought I had miscarried, I stopped. The clinic has said I should start taking it again, but I just wonder if that might have had an adverse effect and could have caused the bleeding etc.

Huge thanks.

There's no chance it was a twin pregnancy and you lost one?

I wondered that but the first scan didn’t see one…

Hi, @IJustNeedToSleep

I experienced a lot of heavy bleeding in my first trimester and passed a really large clot around the size you mentioned. I went for a scan at about 6 weeks to get it confirmed that I had miscarried as I was sure that I had. Scan showed baby still there and a strong heartbeat. I bled up until 13-14 weeks. I had a subchorionic hematoma that thankfully posed no risk to baby but it didn’t stop my endless worry. I’m not entirely sure how best to describe exactly what it is but it was described to me as a pooling of blood/ big bruise that can develop from implantation. This could potentially be something that’s happening with yourself? My pregnancy wasn’t via IVF but I believe IVF can slightly increase the risk of a subchorionic hematoma. Not sure this will be of any help but just thought I’d mention my experience incase it is.

I hope that everything works out well for you with your pregnancy! X

Thanks so much - that really helps.

Ive been in for 2 scans so far and they’ve not been able to see where the blood is coming from.

My anxiety is spiralling and I feel exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster we’ve been on. I just want to know what is going on, which I appreciate is essentially impossible at this stage.

@IJustNeedToSleep I went for about 4 early scans before they saw the hematoma on the last one but were unfortunately unable to give me any real reason for the bleeding up until that point. I really do sympathize as I remember feeling like my first trimester was an emotional rollercoaster of worry. I really hope they can find a reason for your bleeding and that the bleeding stops soon and everything progresses well with your pregnancy! X
