Fertility tests result

I had an ultrasound scan this week as part of fertility tests at Oxford TFP. I had a blood test I’ve not yet had results of.

During internal ultrasound which was done on CD17 the technician pointed out 19 follicles on my left ovary and 16 on the right.

Ive got a follow up appointment next week to discuss with my bloods in more detail but does anyone have any information on if this is good or any other useful feedback? I can see lots of info on follicle numbers when undertaking IVF but not what they mean in relation to fertility.

FYI I’m 38.

This is a good result! The follicles are basically what releases the egg from the ovary, and the more you have the better your chances are of conceiving.

I (at the age of 41) had 7 one one side and 8 on the other, which was good for my age. I have since conceived twice at the age of 43 (one, unfortunately ended as miscarriage). This time round I am now 15 weeks.

Here is a typical number of follicles (baring in mind that it means the total number, in your case 35), the table showing follicle count numbers at the bottom of the page explains numbers:

This is a good result, but I was told that as an older mother it don’t measure the quality of the eggs released. The quality of eggs decreases over time, but I took that with a pinch of salt. This means that there is a higher risk of miscarriage, but only when your are over the age of 40, and even more at 45. At 38 it is not bad.

The AMH blood test to measure the hormone levels are also a good predictor and it is worth waiting for.

Good luck, it looks good so far.

Yes, I was the same. Unfortunately there is no test for egg quality.
