Help! Overdue am I contracting?

HussaAZH · 12/12/2023 22:35

hi. 2nd pregnancy, 40+4 days overdue.
had my midwife appt yesterday, head was engaged, midwife felt baby’s head. I was 1cm dilated and she did a sweep.
i lost my mucus plus last night and continued to into the morning. 6am I had contractions so very strong pains in my back and abdomen. Every ten mins for 6 hours. Then they just completely stopped. The pressure down there is unreal. Now Iv started to get really bad pain in my lower back, so painful. I every ten mins lasting only like 20-30 seconds if that. Is that a contraction? There’s no tightening.
Im so stressed, confused. I would really appreciate all your help, advice, reassurance, your own experiences and knowledge would be great too.

thank you in advance xx

Go to hospital. They would rather see you and send you home than risk something going wrong.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/12/2023 22:41

It sounds like things are moving so you need to go in and get checked out.

lucya66 · 12/12/2023 22:41

Sounds like it is. Ring ward

Quitelikeit · 12/12/2023 22:43

Yep! Keep on timing them

congratulations and yes ring the labour ward!

amd if they tell you not to come in but your instinct says otherwise then just go

Thomo34 · 12/12/2023 22:43

I made the mistake of thinking it wasn't real labour and had an unexpected home birth. Similar experience to you. I'd go to hospital !!

mumtoboys12 · 12/12/2023 22:44

Good luck!

HussaAZH · 12/12/2023 22:52

I rang ward in morning and they said to come in when they last a minute and are 5 mins apart. There’s no consistent part with how far apart they are atm, and they are only lasting 30 seconds but the pains that are coming and going in my back are rather intense! And I feel sick

If you feel like you need to go in then go. They will examine you and let you know what’s happening. Good luck 🤞

jadey1991 · 12/12/2023 23:00

@HussaAZH hey op, I would go straight to the hospital and get checked out. I was in similar situation like you a couple weeks ago. I went hospital and the examined me and I was 2/3cm dilated.

Congratulations and hope all goes well. Keep us updated

theprincessthepea · 12/12/2023 23:02

Sounds like it. You know your body best. Go to hospital. When I was in labour the nurses didn’t believe me as my symptoms weren’t by the books but baby came earlier than they thought.

Good luck x

glasspaw · 13/12/2023 07:14

What was your first labour like? Did you ever settle into a pattern? Some people’s bodies just don’t go by the textbook. My first started and instantly contractions were 3 mins apart, they weren’t painful initially and it was a build in intensity over 4 days. Because of that I’ve been told to not expect a normal contraction pattern with 2nd.

good luck 🩷

Ttcmumma · 13/12/2023 07:21

I hate that they are so specific of how far apart contractions must be before you come in. Mine were 7 minutes apart while fully dilated and pushing! They never got closer together than that for me

HussaAZH · 13/12/2023 11:12

Thank you so much for your responses!! It makes me feel so much better.
i went in today at 7am because i was having contractions all night, averaging 7 mins apart but pain has been so intense in both my back and abdomen.
turns out im only 2cm dilated!! Which is crazy because I thought second baby would be quicker. They said they only want me in when im having 3 contractions within ten mins which is disappointing.

Hi op, I was like that for 3 weeks. I was contracting 3/4 every 10 mins. I had to stand my ground with them because they admitted me 3 times.
I take it they just sent u home

HussaAZH · 13/12/2023 14:17

Omg 3 weeks?!!!! How did you deal with that? I’m struggling with the pain now .
yeah literally sent me home and said come back when contractions are more regular so when they 3 every ten mins.
i don’t know what to do, i don’t even have energy to be walking constantly

If you’re in pain then don’t be afraid to stand your ground. My first labour escalated from 1 > 10cm in 90 minutes. I’d been sent home. It took an ambulance to get me back because I was in active labour by the time the paramedics arrived.

NameChange30 · 13/12/2023 17:31

How are you doing, OP?
Hope things have progressed for you.

Oh believe me hun I struggled.
I just had to prod on and get on with it. Plus I still had 3 other children to think about.

I think if the pains have got more intense then defo worth going back to the hospital

HussaAZH · 13/12/2023 19:42

Thanks for your messages again!
im just stressed now because contractions aren’t regular anymore. When they come, they are so painful. But just not regular enough! It’s been going on two days now.

That sounds exhausting and frustrating.
Do you have a tens machine by any chance or could you borrow or hire one?

PiggieWig · 13/12/2023 19:52

My labours stopped and started. With my second I had a day of contractions like you’re having and they stopped at midnight till 7:30am. When they started up again they progressed fairly normally and baby came at 12:30. I was glad if the break to get a bit of sleep but I was worried at the time. MW told me to take the rest where I could.
My first I was in hospital and was put on a drip to progress things but I preferred the second way.

PiggieWig · 13/12/2023 19:53

Sorry, hit send too soon. Just keep in touch with the ward, and call whenever you need to. They will tell you when to go in (my second was a planned HB so a bit different)

Mummyme87 · 13/12/2023 20:06

This is a typical side effect of sweeps, causing irritable uterus. Regular paracetamol, warm bath and showers. If lots of back pain baby may be a bit malpositioned so build up the cushions and pillows and kneel over them, and try to rest if possible. Hope it happens for you soon

NameChange30 · 13/12/2023 21:22

Yes I did wonder about baby's position if you're getting bad back pain. Have you looked at the spinning babies website OP?

HussaAZH · 13/12/2023 21:37

Oh gosh that doesn’t sound fun either! My contractions are strongest at night which makes me wake up thinking it’s happening , only for it to then slow down. I’m having them simultaneously in my back and stomach at the moment but again, the pattern has stopped so no consistency with how regular they are so hospital definitely won’t want me 😥
