I have a bit of a sweet tooth (actually that's an understatement) and I just ate just over a tub of ice cream... I know too much sugar can cause gestational diabetes but I was wondering can it harm my baby? Such as birth defects or miscarriage?

I'm 5 weeks pregnant and was just having a bit of a rubbish day and honestly just wanted a treat

Too much sugar doesn't cause gestational diabetes, it has nothing to do with diet.

And no, sugar isn't harmful to the baby. Eat all the ice cream you want, especially early on when it might be all you can stomach!

I have regularly eaten entire tubs of hagen daas to myself throughout all 3 of my pregnancies.
At no point did I develop gestational diabetes.
I think it can increase your risk slightly but the biggest risk is it running in your family or having had it before.
Honestly it's obviously never ideal to eat so much sugar but no it won't harm your baby to do that occasionally.
It does however end up making it extra hard to loose the baby weight after giving birth take it from me!!
