Maldives

We are going to the Maldives next year and have also decided to TTC early next year. We are aware of the NHS/government categorisation of Zika but from our research, there hasn't been a reported case since 2015.

Has anyone been whilst pregnant? Or know anyone who has? Women are obviously pregnant and having kids there all the time so I think it would be fine but would appreciate any experiences/opinions.

Thanks

We've also been looking at this, im 18 weeks, I feel like one case years ago isnt a risk but... I dunno! Seems ridiculous to me!

I wouldn't pay all that money to go pregnant. What if you end up with hyperemesis gravidarum, what a miserable time that would be.

That's fair. It can always be moved if necessary though

Where did you find that the last case was 2015?
I would like to research bali! Wasn’t sure of the website

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/01/2024 08:22

I found out I was pregnant a couple of weeks before a planned big trip that included Bali.

I did a lot of reading and thinking and on balance decided to go ahead. We were both absolutely diligent with mosquito spray all the time (and bought local ones there as well as what we'd taken with us) and were fine.

It's a really frightening risk but I kept reminding myself that thousands of Balinese Women have healthy babies every year, and even in the absolute thick of Zika outbreaks it was a small percentage of infected pregnant Women that experienced the worst effects.

This has blighted my whole babymoon experience 😂Im almost third trimester, didnt want to fly first as wanted to pass the 12 week mark and make sure everything was ok, then second has really been over the festive period/my birthday, and now here we are, in January, with only fancier places that are feeling any heat right now, and zika countries written off, leaving so little by way of choice! We SO nearly booked the Maldives, 1 case in 2016 I think I saw? And told myself people there have babies every day! But OH did point out that the figures are likely to be true because so many of these countries rely on tourism. It just felt too big a risk if we had a baby that was ill for the rest of our lives.

So we're off to Mauritius in two weeks instead!

Are there any proper hospitals? I mean real hospitals with intensive care etc?

Where?

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/01/2024 10:09

@Screwballs Don't get me wrong, if we hadn't already had it booked (or had any expectation that I'd get pregnant) we wouldn't have chosen Bali, but as it was days away we had to make a choice. If we'd cancelled we'd have also had to explain to people why, and I was absolutely not ready to tell anyone we were expecting at that stage either. I didn't really believe it was real and would stick until the 12 week scan!

Have a great time in Mauritius; we were there on our honeymoon and it was fabulous 🙂

You'll have been and gone by now and hopefully had your baby :)

If anyone else is reading this. Risk of Silas is low in Maldives but prudent to stay in an overwater bungalow as zero bugs.

I'm going for my 2nd baby moon
