Hi,

Can anyone offer advice or insight as to why our babies face seems so pointy/elongated in the 12 wk scan? Is this normal? I was 12wks +1 at the scan so I know baby has a whole lot of growing and developing to be done yet but just curious.

Thank you xx

You should have seen the state of my DD's scan - her nose looked bigger than her face. And dont even get me started on her 3D scan... I was upset for weeks thinking she had some serious deformities.

She came out beautiful and completely normal.

If the sonographer wasn't worried, I wouldn't be worried. Babies sometimes look really freaky on scans.

Mine looked like a lizard/alien hybrid. Seriously scary. If nothing was mentioned it’ll be fine I should think.

Thank you for your reply 🙏🏼 absolutely no concern was raised at the scan thankfully, we kind of joked it off saying it wasn’t a great angle but just after comparing to my little boys scan I think I have ended up planting a seed!

I've had scan pictures like this.. I always just thought it was the baby moving as the image was taken so it elongates/blurs part of it as in a normal photo 🤷‍♀️ it definitely doesn't mean anything!

Aww OP that's a mini Homer Simpson ☺️. One of mine wasn't even recognizable as a baby, it was a very odd shape and I really doubted I was even pregnant. Thankfully at 20 weeks things looked a bit more human like and she came out absolutely fine!

mmuumm · 15/11/2023 19:20

@gentlemum yes this is what I was thinking too! thank you x

They won't look human for a while yet 😂

Mine had a very oddly shaped head at 12 weeks. 4D scan showed a very human looking baby. I'll let you know how human he looks when he arrives, I'm now 38 weeks and scans look human!

This was my lo. Also pointy features, giving Mr Burns vibes! The scan was not a reliable predictor of how cute he came out looking (thankfully!).

@feralunderclass lol more mr burns than homer I think 😁 poor baba, it does seem that baby has been moving when the pic was taken as gentlemum says 🙏🏼 thank you for your reply and roll on the 20 wk scan (will probably book another private one before then haha!)

I wouldn't worry about it, I have scan pictures like that too and others looking different. It also depends if baby was moving at the time of the picture and the angle. The ultrasound doesn't give you an exact image. Your baby is looking fine!

I had my 12 week 5 day scan on Wednesday and its a very similar scan photo to yours, you can see his/her little now but its like his/her chin is a beard haha im sure its all fine and just the scan photo and angles. We just say my little Alien atm lol :)

I was terrified with my scans, he looked like Homer Simpson with the big mouth. I was going to pay to go private but was too scared to see. Safe to say he was perfectly normal when he came lol
