Been on Omeprazole the entire pregnancy. How to stop?

I've got one more week of pregnancy to go. I've been on one 20mg Omeprazole tablet a day since about 8 weeks. If I miss a tablet for one day I get really bad heartburn and acid in my stomach.
I've been reading about how bad it actually is to be on Omeprazole for more than a few weeks and that you can have withdrawal symptoms when stopping suddenly after a long time.

Has anyone else been on it for their whole pregnancy and how did you find stopping? Just stop completely or taper off somehow?

I had heartburn throughout my second pregnancy. Gave birth and it disappeared. I kept expecting it to come back.

I used it throughout two pregnancies and was totally reliant on it. I stopped the day I gave birth, both times. No withdrawal, just didn't need it any more. I don't think I even thought about taking it as the symptoms all went.

This. Don't suffer, just keep taking it while you need it.

Hi,

I took lansoprazole recently for about four weeks. Suddenly after that it started to disagree with me, and I just to just stop it completely, with no choice whatsoever. The next few days had a lot of stomach acid but I just took rennies and chewed wrigley white peppermint gum and after a few days the stomach acid was gone. I had to stop taking effervescence vitamin C pills too as they were making the stomach acid much much worse.

I think it depends on different circumstances because a few years ago I was on ranitidine for 6 years and I had a hard time giving that up. It was only when it was discontinued that I had to stop completely. For some reason I had no problems. I really don't understand what had changed.

It may help to get really good at doing soothing calming activities, because stomach acid is often exacerbated by being stressed. I find folding the washing calms me right down.

Good luck with it.

Exact same here. Used it for two pregnancies, stopped as soon as I gave birth, no issues as far as I could tell.

Fingers crossed it'll be the same for me and I can just stop once baby is here. I'm just concerned as I've read about the stomach over producing acid once you stop omeprazole suddenly, takes a few weeks to go back to normal. Doesn't sound like fun on top of recovering from a c section. Hopefully that won't be the case though.

If you're concerned about suddenly stopping then try it slowly, maybe start 4-5 days a week or every other day and then see how you go without it

I was on omeprazole throughout my pregnancy and experienced the same as others - didn't think twice about stopping and haven't had any issues since.

You can reduce slowly. Eg get prescription for 10mg and start by alternating 10mg/ 20mg, then few days of straight 10mg, then every other day etc.
