Missed miscarriage

Hi, I found out today I’m having a missed miscarriage. I’m 6 weeks 3 days and measuring at 2.5mm and sac 6cm, I had a scan done at 5 weeks 3 days, they said they saw the fetal pole without a heartbeat and that they should of seen a 1mm growth per day. What are the chances somethings a mistake? My hcg is doubling every 2 and a half days and my progesterone is still increasing. I’m just so confused. They told me to take tablets but this early pregnancy unit have been awful from start to finish. I don’t know what to do. How to feel. The baby grew in that week but only by 1mm. Did anyone have a similar experience? I’ve had no bleeding or cramping. Only thing that’s worried me is I don’t have morning sickness. I just don’t know what to do 💔

I would wait another week

Thank you for your kind and supportive message. Don’t know why even bother messaging on this forum.

Oh, @elisha1375 that sounds awful and heartbreaking... It must be such a stressful situation to be in...

Were they totally certain in the EPU? Was it a doctor that made an assessment and were they 100% sure about it?
If not, I would also feel, like you, reluctant to do anything before I'm totally convinced.

elisha1375 · 07/11/2023 00:06

It was a sonographer, she went to get another one to confirm it but I was so upset they just relied on the images she took. Honestly I had about 100 questions and they answered none. They said they could offer another scan in a week to triple check as the baby had grown but they gave me about 10 leaflets on miscarriage, gave me a miscarriage box. It’s the most heartbreaking decision, I’m now just praying I start bleeding naturally and I don’t have to make this decision. They were 100% sure or the one woman was and it had only grown 1mm and it should grow 1mm a day. But I’m still so early, I’m only 6.2 weeks maybe less, what’s confusing is my hcg is still doubling every few days.

So sorry you’re going through this- it is unbelievably hard.
if there is a foetal pole(little body) and no heartbeat then I’m afraid it isn’t viable anymore. It is more likely that it didn’t grow 1mm in a week, but that the person doing the scan just measured in a slightly different place. Think of how tiny a mm really is!
If you are really concerned you could get a private second opinion.
wishing you all the best x

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Trust your doctors and take it step by step. Miscarriages are tough, and not having morning sickness is okay. Lean on your support system.

Torganer · 07/11/2023 07:02

Yes, agree with the above, it doesn’t look a viable pregnancy. I had no symptoms with mine, no bleeding at all. I opted for the surgical management for subsequent miscarriages after having horrible pain passing it on my first miscarriage. I found it quick and painless. Have they given you this option?

Rio93 · 07/11/2023 13:55

@elisha1375 hey. This is so awful - so sorry. I’m currently at the tail end of MMC and having surgery tomorrow. Like you, early on I was given a pre warning about growth in a private scan. Baby made it all the way to 9 weeks with a heartbeat but by 12 week scan had dwindled into 3.5 mm. Sadly, you’re body can still think you’re pregnant like mine has and the sac can grow and I’m nearly 15 weeks. I drove myself mad looking at medical papers ect about crl and growth per day but I knew deep down what would happen. It’s your body so maybe wait another week and have another scan as you are early. Sadly they see this everyday as I was told yesterday in EPU xx

TheShellBeach · 07/11/2023 14:05

I'm very sorry about your baby, OP.
It's awful to suffer a miscarriage.

If I were you I'd have just one more scan in a week. Then you'll know for sure.

If it definitely shows as a miscarriage, I myself would opt for surgical management. Medical is often very drawn-out and ineffective.

MsFrog · 07/11/2023 14:09

I think it you can, you should wait a week and see what happens. I was once told at 6 weeks there was no heartbeat and they had even scheduled me for surgery the next day because they thought it might be ectopic. The next morning, they scanned me again before the surgery and found a baby with a heartbeat. I think this early it's possible to make mistakes. I know they have a previous scan they are comparing it to, so your circumstances are different. But it won't change the outcome of you wait and ask for confirmation.

Take care - I've been there and it's heartbreaking xx

elisha1375 · 08/11/2023 16:58

Thank you, I didn’t realise this, I was told not to have surgical as it has more risks and as I’m so small it’s safer for tablets? I’m just so confused about it all, it was all very rushed, was told straight away pregnancy isn’t viable and told to take the tablets, I asked questions which were left unanswered.

Rio93 · 08/11/2023 17:23

Hey. I was given all the leaflets before the surgery - main risk were perforation to the womb which would heal quickly anyway. No such thing happened. It really sounds like you’re not having a good experience with this EPU. I had my surgery this morning - was done quickly and I felt relief after the pain and bleeding I’ve been in for 2 weeks. I did research on here about the tablets and I opted not to because I have three other children at home and didn’t want them to witness it. Don’t be pushed into anything. Just take the option that you feel more at peace with xx

elisha1375 · 08/11/2023 17:33

No this EPU have been awful. Are you put to sleep during surgery? I wanted to pass naturally but I’ve seen on here where baby died at 6 weeks like me and they didn’t find out till first scan at 12-13 weeks and couldn’t bear waiting that long. It’s so difficult on what to do. I just keep praying I see blood Everytime I go to the toilet and don’t have to make the decision, I haven’t really heard anyone on here talk about medical only surgical but they may of been further along than me

TheShellBeach · 08/11/2023 17:37

Yes OP you're put to sleep for the surgery.
I've had it done a few times unfortunately, including twice at your gestation.

Torganer · 08/11/2023 17:41

I’ve also sadly had three surgical and one natural. The surgical was much easier. I’ve had them from 6.5wks-11wks.

Rockschooldropout · 08/11/2023 17:42

I’m sorry you are going through this , if they are seeing a fetal pole but no heartbeat , it’s likely it isn’t viable I’m afraid but I’d be inclined to wait a week for a re scan . If no heartbeat is visible then , you’ll know for sure .

Sometimes it can be a case of too early … 20 years ago I was scanned at 6 weeks and they only saw an empty sac .. but my HCG was escalating .. and I was already throwing up . I was told I had a molar pregnancy , was re booked in for a scan a week later and sent home with leaflets on Charing Cross and molar pregnancy info , I was heartbroken and scared but a scan a week later showed a fetal pole and heartbeat.

Usually if it’s just very early you’d see an empty sac until the embryo was big enough so the likelihood here is sadly it’s not good news .. but as I said .. if you have a re scan in a week you will have a definitive answer

Rockschooldropout · 08/11/2023 17:50

I just noted you said fetal pole was 2.5 mm ? I’m sure that’s about right for 6 weeks 2days .. I’d really be inclined to wait a week .. if no heartbeat at 7 weeks then this Would be a firm answer x

elisha1375 · 08/11/2023 18:19

That’s exactly what I thought but the scan before I measured 1.2mm and only grew 1mm in a week, I’m praying it was a mistake at the first scan because she said I think that’s the fetal pole but was only 5 weeks but I’ll see next week at scan 💔

Rockschooldropout · 08/11/2023 18:21

Hang fire for a week .. you’ve got nothing to lose xx

Rio93 · 08/11/2023 21:37

You poor thing. My EPU were amazing. Yes so I was put to sleep today and it was honestly all fine. I tried to wait for it to happen naturally too which it will eventually but 15 weeks for me was too much especially with the sac growing. I do agree with other people to wait another week as hard as that is because that will give you the definitive answer biologically x
