Do I need to go to A&E?

Hi,

I'm about 5 weeks pregnant after a previous ectopic that resulted in my tube removed over the summer. Over the last few days I've had on and off quite bad back pain and a few twinges in my abdomen, then this morning I've had some dark red/brown spotting. I took a test and my test line looks slightly lighter than it did previously.
I already have a scan booked at the EPU for next week to check the placement and I rang today and they said they couldn't fit me in sooner. I'm still getting quite a lot of back cramps.
I really don't want to lose my other tube. Not sure if I'm miscarrying, if it's another ectopic or what...
Is A&E my best option or do I need to sit it out?

The EPU closed at 4 so not an option now.
I think I just have to wait until Monday unless I start feeling more pain. This is so shit. I'm 90% sure now it's another one. Yesterday I cried and really tried to get seen properly and nothing.

I've had two healthy pregnancies in the past (which I am very grateful for) why would I now only be getting ectopics?!

When I started bleeding 2 days before my early scan with my second pregnancy it was a Saturday and my local EPU was closed. I rang the hospital's gynaecology team instead and they told me to present at A&E.

I would ring 111 for advice. They will almost certainly tell you to go to A&E. I did that with my ectopic and they told me which A&E to go to and that they would alert A&E to be ready for me. If you could yet them to do that for you it may help you at A&E?

Otherwise, go back and say you're feeling worse, the bleeding is worse and hope they will scan you now. If they don't, contact PALS and make a fuss.

@Herewegoagain49 - how're you today? If you've not already been scanned over the weekend, I hope you get seen as planned today.

Herewegoagain49 · 06/11/2023 11:21

@DemelzaRobins Thank you for thinking of me. I had the scan - nothing to be seen, pregnancy of unknown location... Just as my last one started. Taken my bloods and will ring me back today.
Really shit. Why is this happening again?!

I'm so so sorry to hear that. It's heart breaking. I hope that you have some support around you. I'm sorry the hospital wouldn't see you sooner, I know the waiting adds to the distress. xx

Keeping fingers crossed for you. I had PUL at 5-6 weeks. But it turned out to be fine and now I'm almost 19 weeks xxx

Sorry to hear that OP. Are you having more bloods in a few days to monitor your HCG levels?

Herewegoagain49 · 07/11/2023 10:14

So after this, I actually had better news... My blood tests showed really low progesterone and HCG levels likely to be a failing pregnancy rather than ectopic. I never thought I'd be so relieved to be told I had a failing pregnancy...
A couple of hours later I started bleeding properly. So, still sad but much better than the prospect of a second ectopic!

The midwife said that I need to wait a full cycle to try again to let the lining of my womb build up properly. Is that true? I know I've heard of people getting pregnant before a full period after a miscarriage - does it affect chances of a healthy pregnancy?

I'm so sorry to hear you're losing them and totally understand the relief it's not ectopic.

I don't know the full research behind it but I was also told to wait a month after so they can be sure there's nothing left from the last pregnancy when you are pregnant again.

I'm 40 and was pregnant again within 2 months of trying. We're at 15 weeks now. I really wish you all the best.

I’m so sorry for what you’ve been through. I had an early miscarriage October last year and got pregnant again the following cycle. Unfortunately that also ended in an early loss but I then got pregnant again the cycle following that (so 3 cycles in a row) and my 11 week old is napping next to me right now. I was never advised to wait a cycle as they were early miscarriages (just 6 weeks) so unlikely to be anything retained and the tests went negative so knew they were new pregnancies each time

DemelzaRobins · 08/11/2023 15:05

After my loss at 5 weeks EPU told me to wait one full cycle before TTC again. They said it makes it easier to date the next pregnancy which is especially useful for women who have had a previous ectopic as they will need an early scan for each subsequent pregnancy.

EPU scanned me the day I started bleeding 5+2 and then scanned me again 9 days later to confirm the miscarriage had completed.
