Opinion on 12 week scan - normal or am I stressing over nothing?

This pic is from my 12 week scan, I was actually only 11+5. I had an awful scan experience, sonographer said baby was in a poor position and we struggled to get it in a good position. He also pressed so hard on my stomach to the point I was in pain!

Anyway, my pics were so bad they gave me them for free. I’ve found myself comparing my pictures to everyone else’s, where you just seem to be able to see all parts of the baby so clearly. Does my scan pic look normal? I feel like it’s got a big head and a small body. I’m probably just getting really in my head about it - but any honest opinions are welcome…

Seems fine, they've just not managed to get decent angles of baby but you can make out there is a forming baby in there. My sister's scan looks like her baby has no face! I think it's just the way they lay at the time, if they move etc. My NHS scans at 13 weeks weren't great but private scan at 13+4 was amazing quality. Really depends on the machine used and how much time/effort the sonographer is willing to put into getting you decent shots x

At 12 weeks the baby is a size of lime, so imagine getting all that in a dating scan photo would be quite difficult. Dont worry, each scan is different according to baby position etc. You will have a detailed nuchal scan at 20 weeks where they look at everything in greater detail. This is what my baby looked like at 12 weeks. Doesn't even look like a baby 😜, hes now the most gorgeous 1 year old and very normal looking.

Hope your pregnancy goes well. x

Congrats. Looks normal to me! The head grows first anyway

Thank you… I just needed to have some reassurance 🥹

I think that looks pretty standard to me! And usually the sonographer should tell you if they’re concerned about things like that.

Why don’t you book in for a private scan somewhere? I’ve found them to be much clearer pics and such a nicer experience. The overall feeling you get there is much more positive and comforting.

I think it’s like the post above says - depends on the machines, how long the sonographer spends & where the baby is.
Sometimes they get you to go for a short walk if they’re struggling for the position of them! 😊

Hope you feel reassured soon and congrats on the 12 week milestone. Enjoy it. I’ve just hit it myself and feel so relieved after weeks of anxiety xxx

Thanks - I’ve had a private scan before 12 weeks & I have my gender one booked in a few weeks, so I can’t really afford another between then. I hate having to wait!

I very rarely got a good photo from my scans. The baby was always in 'wrong' position (for photos) so the photos were useless. Enjoy your journey! Smile

Looks better than mine! The only thing we could see well was the brain... which is good, of course, but not the cute little photo I was hoping for 😂

Edisnoriylime · 15/04/2026 20:08

@Thankyouthankyoujellybean ages since you posted but if they could only see the brain , where there some organs or limbs you couldn't see at the 12 week scan ? I just had mine . Turns out I'm 11.5 weeks and they found everything normal but couldn't find the stomach. He said sometimes he thought he saw it ...

CoolNoMore · 15/04/2026 20:29

Ooof, sorry @Edisnoriylime I don't remember anything about this now! She's just turned two... seems to have everything she should! Did the sonographer flag any concerns?

Edisnoriylime · 15/04/2026 20:34

No none at all and said it was a bit early to see everything or sometimes the baby has just emptied itself. He said amniotic fluid level is normal which is a good sign baby is swallowing. So frustrating as they keep saying I'm early but they booked me in for today! But no he said I shouldn't worry and even phoned me after the appointment to say I seemed a bit worried and said he could scan me again on his lunch break Friday. Sadly I can't do tomorrow so have to wait until next Thursday...
I know he said not to worry but I'm struggling not to 🙈

It's easy for me to say now - I have three kids and scanxiety is a distant memory - but you've got to try your best not to worry. The only thing to really care about at the 12 week scan is whether or not there's a heartbeat.

You are pregnant. There is a heatbeat. This is wonderful. Congratulations!

Edisnoriylime · 16/04/2026 09:39

@CoolNoMore yes thank you ! Thata what I needed to hear. Honestly with my first daughter I don't think they even checked for the bladder and stomach at my 12 week scan !

CoolNoMore · 08/05/2026 07:06

@Edisnoriylime How's it going? I hope all is well.

Edisnoriylime · 08/05/2026 07:29

@CoolNoMore thanks for checking! I got an actual twelve week scan and they saw the stomach ! By then I'd already convinced myself I was panicking over nothing because most research said 11 weeks was a bit early to see it. So feeling much better ! Baby looked very happy in there 🤩 I'm worrying so much more with this second pregnancy!
