Itching at 27 weeks

I’ve been feeling itchy for a few days now but this has ramped up massively today. The itching is mainly my hands, feet and lower legs. I have done some reading on ICP and know I would need to get a blood test to rule it out. Is it worth contacting the maternity day unit tomorrow or waiting for my next bloods with midwife in about 9 days time? I don’t want to jump the gun and I know from what I’ve read that itching can start before bile levels would have risen anyway. Anyone have experience with this, specially around this gestation?

I would contact your maternity unit tomorrow and get it checked out. Don’t leave it until nine days time.

Maternity unit tomorrow. Obstetric cholestasis needs to be diagnosed as soon as possible.

Yes definitely call tomorrow. As far as I know the bloods at 28 weeks don't routinely check bile acids so she would have to do an extra test anyway, which you might as well have sooner rather than later.

I had this, when I told my midwife at my routine appointment, she sent me to the hospital for a blood test there and then. I then had to have weekly blood tests to keep an eye on the levels. Definitely get checked out sooner rather than later.
They also prescribed cream for the itching and I took piriton daily. So worth going for this too!

You need to get this checked, my sister had this at pregnancy and ignored the itching for a number of weeks! You need to report this it could be nothing or it could be cholestasis which she had! Nothing is worth waiting in pregnancy

Thanks everyone 😊 I just hate the thought of wasting their time but, you’re right, it’s not worth waiting. I’ll ring the day unit in the morning.

I itched like crazy at the end of my pregnancy can't remember the outcome or if I got checked didn't know it was serious back when I was pregnant 12 years ago but anyway it was horrible

Hi OP, I was diagnosed with ICP at 29 weeks, and I'll repeat what PPs have said - definitely go and get checked tomorrow rather than wait ❤️
