Hello,

I had GD with my first pregnancy. This was due to high fasting readings only.
I'm now 10+1.
Had my GTT test at 9+5.
First blood 9.35am and second at 12.15pm as they were short staffed - so way over the 2 mark but my after reading was never an issue.
4.6 and 5.5.

My Dad recently died of his diabetes and high blood sugar levels, unexpectedly, as he controlled it for 60 odd years.

I've since been doing finger prick testing at home as of course want to make sure I'm not at risk. Since being pregnant, all my fasting readings are between 6.7-7.6 on finger prick test.

I called the MW after she sent my results and she totally dismissed me and said not to do that and to go by the GTT result. Now, how can 9.35am be a fasting reading when I was awake since 6am and my GTT test in my first pregnancy was taken 7am. Surely my bloods had enough to drop down by that blood test?

I assume my finger prick testing would mean I do in fact have GD?! Do I push for a referral for diabetic team (I was on 50+ units of insulin with my first) or am I not understanding this correct?

Thank you 🙏🏼

GD is usually progressive from pregnancy to pregnancy, can develop at any time and does progress through pregnancy. If your readings were more accurate after fasting last time, you're likely right. I knew I had it at 5w in my last pregnancy. MW told me to forget until GTT at 28 weeks. I was on metformin my 7w and injecting by 12.

The testing kits don't last, they have to be calibrated so may not be giving accurate readings, however.

Anyway. If I were you I'd contact the diabetic midwife direct and ask them. That's what I did (altho it had only been a year so I still had all her details) and she made me an appointment the same week and gave me a new kit.

Thank you 🙏🏼

I've tested after meals and readings seem to be accurate but wasn't aware they expire as such!! I'm going to call the MW again on Monday and ask for a referral to diabetic team! I don't have their contact anymore 😭

Just follow the GD diet anyway for now, they'll be testing you at least a couple more times anyway won't they as you've had it before? I think it's pretty normal to have the GTT at 9:35, mine was around the same time.

My post meal readings aren't they issue that's why I'm panicked I need to be referred. It's my fasting readings and only medication can control that, I'm so thirsty too and awful headaches so I'm actually contesting GP tomorrow to hopefully get referred as my GP worked in women's Heath/pregnancy prior so is very understanding 🙏🏼

I've of course followed the diet anyway in the hope my fasting would change but 7.4 this morning after chicken, salad, asparagus and a couple new Potato's for tea last night 😭
