When did you start getting your baby stuff/baby's room ready?

I'm just 20wks (scan next week hurrah!) and a friend of mine has just given me a load of baby stuff including a cot (age gap with other dc so had got rid of most of my stuff). We've dumped everything in our box room, which will be baby's room, but I'm feeling really anxious and paranoid about it being there!

Is it tempting fate to start getting stuff together this early? This is no3 and I had a miscarriage last year so am quite paranoid anyway. My other two dc were so excited about seeing all the baby things but now I just feel a sense of dread that something will go horribly wrong! Have had to cover everything up with dust sheets (which feels equally creepy!!). Have got friend who will have nothing in her house til baby arrives and another who bought a christening gown when she got engaged! So maybe different strokes for different folks. But am starting to obsess a bit.
And DH thinks I'm going mental.
Am I????

When I was pg, I accumulated things but didn't put them out. We couldn't sort his room as it was still being constructed (dh put up ceiling when ds was 4 days old!) so that wasn't an issue. I think you are pretty normal. Sorry for your mc last year - that probably makes you more sensitive to it. maybe your other dcs could look at books about having a new baby in the house or catalogues of baby paraphenalia to keep them going? Hope the rest of your pg goes well.

we started getting our nursery quite early. I think it was from around 12 weeks as we were both so excited and we wanted to buy stuff gradually and not be paniced at the last minute that everything was not ready and I know I will not have time or inclinaton to decorate etc once DD arrives. Also we had to paint the whole room so you need to ensure that all paint fumes have gone before you bring your little one home. I kept thinking about what might happen but I figured that if anything went wrong it would be just as difficult no matter how much stuff we had bought already so we preferred to be prepared. Good luck with whatever you decide but if you perhaps do some research and write a complete list of what you will need and where you will buy it from you and get DH to buy it all afterwards if you are worried

I bought bits, but not until after 20 week scan - we ordered the pram then, but left cot etc until 32 weeks. Absolutley nothing out at all, but room was already an acceptable colour.

Of course when DS arrived at 35 weeks, DH had to get friends to put everything together/ do a massive shop in Mothercare/ harass the shop about the pram.

do it whenever you like
i can't wait to get mine done ( i'm only 12 weeks ) and would start on it now but am in the middle of a new kitchen so will have to wait
but i want to put my books out and the few bits of clothes, sling etc and just slowly get ready
the thing is i will be keeping the baby in my room for probably the first 6 months anyway so there is no urgency.
