Pregnancy

Private scans

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help. I am currently 9 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I was thinking about having a private scan as my first NHS scan isnt until I am about 14 weeks and I dont think I can wait that long to find out if everything is okay!

I was wondering if I had to let my midwife know that I was going for a private scan or if I just went ahead and booked one and only needed to let her know if there were any problems?

Hope someone can help!

Hi and many congrats! There's no reason why you have to let your midwife know about the scan - I had a number of private scans early on in pregnancy due to having fertility treatment, and my NHS midwife was absolutely fine about them.

Congratulations!
I had 2 private scans - a nuchal fold scan and a 20 week scan - and my midwife was fine about it.
The only negative I got was when I told the scanner at my 12 weeks NHS scan that I had already had a private scan - she became very snippy and did the briefest of scans telling me that I had to go with her dates as they would be correct and not the dates from the private scan (they turned out to be exactly the same ) - she was very fierce and very scary!!!

No reason at all to tell and I was prepared - as meep said some will get funny with you if they know you have had a private scan before - a friend who had her 20 week scan recently was in and out in less than 10 minutes. May be don't say to the sonographer until after to make sure you get the full scan time.

Enjoy it - it was mindblowing to us!

I wouldn't mention it. Here, if you opt for a private nuchal fold scan at 11 weeks they will use this for your dating scan so don't do the 12-14 week one. I had a private scan at 10 weeks as I'd had previous mcs and was anxious, but didn't tell my MW and had the NHS dating scan as well. I needed the extra reassurance.

Thanks for that everyone.

I just dont want to say anything if I dont have to. It says on the 'babybond' website they need to know who your GP/Midwife is so I assumed that they maybe told them you had been?

I think that might just be for their own insurance purposes. When I had mine done, thay asked for the same information and gave me a report for my notes. If they sent a copy to my GP it certainly never affected the NHS scan. I was worried it would be cancelled, but it wasn't.

I had a private scan and they providedme with a copy of the notes for my MW. She completely understood and was happy to talk me through the notes too.

Congrats and good luck!
