I think I might be pregnant 10 weeks pp

I’m 10 weeks pp, I started having sex again pretty soon after which was unprotected but dh did pull out, I then started the pill at 3 weeks pp, & took my first period at 5 weeks pp, I use the flo app & according to it my period is now 8 days late , my last period was the 14th September, I’m not thinking too much of this as maybe my period are just regulating themselves after a baby & the pill could also be the reason.

but I definitely have symptoms exactly like the ones I had when I found out with my baby. The day before I found out I was pregnant I had painful cramping in my left side , last night I had this. Also about a week before I found out I had a random emotional breakdown & last night I was the exact same, this only happened twice in my life, before I found out I was pregnant with dh and last night. Before I found out with dh I also had insomnia for some reason I could not for the life of me switch off , last night I was the EXACT same could not sleep even tho baby sleeps through the night.

I don’t know, I’m convinced. But I suppose this means I would have fell pregnant on the pill? Am I being crazy? I would like to add the first week of using the pill we used condoms to let the pill kick in.

I can’t take a test until tonight which I will, so I’ll update , I am so scared , I would be so disappointed to be honest .

I have been meaning to test for a few days now because I just have a feeling but I’m TOO scared to see those 2 lines pop up.

suppose I’m posting this for support IF I am…

is it likely? My head is all over the place atm

Is just regulating itself*

Before I found out I was pregnant with DS* my head is all over the place clearly

10 weeks pp my head was all over the place in general.
It can take a lot longer for periods to regulate.
Hopefully the test will put your mind at ease.
Are you breastfeeding? That can affect periods too

chillipod · 21/10/2023 11:58

If you're only 10 weeks pp I wouldn't expect periods to be back in your usual pattern yet? Take a test of course, but being "late" might just be your body regulating things out again.

SecondUsername4me · 21/10/2023 11:59

Your body and hormones are probably still a bit all over the shop. Save the test for the morning and use first morning wee.

jadey1991 · 21/10/2023 12:01

Take a test and see

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/10/2023 12:01

Your body, hormones and periods will still be all over the place but ultimately the only way to know is to test.
You are highly fertile after having a baby so interesting you used condoms with the pill but pull out method without.

FirstFallopians · 21/10/2023 12:06

Well it could either way- you’ve had unprotected sex and like the midwives warn us all, you’ll have been very fertile.

My period arrived six weeks on the button after both births and resumed their normal pattern like clockwork.

In the nicest way, it’s no use worrying about it right this minute if you can’t just run to the shop and buy a test. Put it out of your mind until you can actually find out, it won’t change the result.

MargotBamborough · 21/10/2023 12:14

Are you breastfeeding, OP?

If you are, it would be incredibly unusual for you to have ovulated so soon after giving birth.

Regardless of whether you are breastfeeding or not, if you are on the pill and have been taking it properly then there's very little chance that you are pregnant. And if you are on the pill there's no point using a period tracking app because you won't be having real periods. If you are on a combined pill where you take a week off and have a "period", it's not a real period, it's just bleeding that happens because you've stopped taking the pill for a week so the level of progesterone in your body falls which acts as a signal to your uterus to shed its lining. If you're on a progesterone only pill then you don't have a "cycle" at all. Generally speaking you're not supposed to bleed at all but sometimes you might get random breakthrough bleeding.

All this is to say that if you're on the pill you don't have periods so there is nothing to track. Period tracking apps are for women who are not on hormonal contraception and are having a natural menstrual cycle.

By all means take a test to put your mind at rest but I think the chances of you being pregnant are virtually nil.

Hi OP, not much advice here but my mother got pregnant with my brother literally a month pp so it definitely does happen!
try not to stress too much as like others have said it may be that your periods are just still regulating. Always better to be aware and check! Good luck :)

selly29 · 21/10/2023 13:18

Also just to add, my mother also got pregnant on every single contraceptive she took until she had the coil which seemed to be the only thing that worked for her😂
I actually went on the pill pp to control my periods as they got really out of hand following birth I never knew when I was coming on. A month I came off it and bam im pregnant with my second ✌🏼i guess the only way you’ll know for sure is by taking a test:)

If she is on the pill her periods are not regulating.

A period is when your womb sheds its lining 10-16 days after you ovulate. Women on the pill do not ovulate and they certainly do not need to use period tracking apps. If they bleed it's either because they're on a combined contraceptive which makes them bleed when they stop taking it for a week, in which case they know exactly when to expect their fake "period", or its because they're on a progesterone only contraceptive which sometimes causes random breakthrough bleeding. This is not cyclical and a period tracking app will be about as much use as a chocolate teapot in telling you when to expect it, because it's random.

Going on the pill does not control your periods. It stops you ovulating.

selly29 · 21/10/2023 13:34

@MargotBamborough
i do know what a period is😂

I think to say all women on the pill don’t ovulate is a bit bold. It really depends on the way everyone reacts to the pill, when it is taken, how it is taken etc. I know plenty of people who got pregnant on the pill who took it religiously.

I agree that when on the pill in most cases you know when you bleed, being on the pill myself for a couple years I already know this.

That being said I had to change from the pill that you don’t have a break from to the one you do have a break from as I bled constantly and for others and myself at the time it was confusing. I guess what im trying to say is even if Flo isn’t very useful whilst on contraceptive it’s not the case for every single person on the pill. Theres also filters you can add to say how long your cycle is etc so with the pill it’s 28 days, which if logged and documented correctly on the Flo app it will give you accuracy to when you will have a “fake bleed”, when your body has gotten used to the pill and there is a routine so to speak.

as I said before it’s not unheard of to get pregnant on ANY contraceptive let alone the pill. So it’s best for OP to check regardless

also as far as the pill not being used to control periods is false. My GP were the ones who suggested going on the pill to control the bleeding and make them regular and it worked.

many women who suffer with irregular periods are advised to go on the pill to regulate bleeds.

MargotBamborough · 21/10/2023 13:44

You don't ovulate on the pill if it works though. That's the whole point.

Most people who get pregnant whilst on the pill have not taken it properly so it hasn't worked.

Any bleeding whilst on the pill is not a period because a period is bleeding that follows ovulation. Most bleeding whilst on the pill is a fake period, designed to mimic a natural cycle.

Any GP suggesting you go on the pill to regulate your periods is either an idiot who doesn't understand what a period is or how the pill works, or they think you are an idiot and can't be arsed to explain it to you properly so they just tell you that it regulates your periods. The reality is that you are not having real periods and there is no need for you to be having any bleeding at all if you are happy to be on hormonal contraception.

selly29 · 21/10/2023 13:50

@MargotBamborough well explain to me how my mother got pregnant on the pill? She took it exactly how she was supposed to. Many people have. “Most people who get pregnant on the pill haven’t taken it properly”- so by admitting even a small minority who have taken it properly get pregnant contradicts yourself really.

when you go through 5 weeks of bleeding in a row yourself and have to go the GP to get help then come back to me and “correct” me on my OWN experiences. And no it doesn’t make neither my GP or myself idiots. It’s common sense. You bleed irregularly- bleeds regulate on contraceptive. Nothing idiotic about that.

selly29 · 21/10/2023 13:56

Anyway OP, good luck anyway!

Statistically, the most likely explanation is that your mother did not actually take it properly, or that she vomited or took antibiotics which can stop it from working.

There are many, many women who will claim that they got pregnant whilst taking the pill perfectly. But statistically they can't all be in the 0.1%, which suggests that at least some of them are in denial or just don't want to admit that they're rubbish at taking their pill properly or they actually wanted to get pregnant.

I'm sorry you bled for five weeks but going on the pill does not regulate your periods. It stops your periods, because it stops you ovulating. The only reason it appears to "regulate your periods" is because you are taking a pill for three weeks which stops you from bleeding, and then you stop taking it for a week which makes you bleed, and then you take it again for another three weeks etc. It is not a period. It is a completely fake cycle which there is absolutely no need for you to be having. If you're not TTC and you don't mind being on the combined pill, you might as well run your packs together indefinitely and save yourself a ton of money on sanpro.

Many people don't realise that antibiotics stop the pill working properly. It should be standard to say that when prescribed.

To be fair, it says that on the instructions which you are supposed to read.

selly29 · 21/10/2023 14:01

@LylaLee when did I say antibiotics WERE taken at the same time as the pill?

dementedpixie · 21/10/2023 14:03

@momkoul Which pill are you using? Is it a combined or mini pill? With the combined pill you should have a bleed in the pill free week. The mini pill can make periods more erratic or stop them altogether.

It would have been unlikely for you to get pregnant in the 1st 3 weeks and that's why contraception is advised from 21 days after the birth.

LylaLee · 21/10/2023 14:04

I'm not saying it definitely happened to your mother, but so, so many people don't know antibiotics lead to contraceptive failure.

LylaLee · 21/10/2023 14:05

MargotBamborough · 21/10/2023 13:59

To be fair, it says that on the instructions which you are supposed to read.

People don't read the small print. "Every 12 hours with food. Don't mix with alcohol? That's all I need to know."

selly29 · 21/10/2023 14:05

@LylaLee well it’s definitely something I wasn’t aware of.

but no, my mom was never on any form of antibiotics at the time she got pregnant or the weeks leading up to it

MargotBamborough · 21/10/2023 14:07

@selly29 Antibiotics is one of the only explanations for the pill not working though.

Essentially, if you are taking the pill perfectly in accordance with the instructions, then unless you are taking medication which interferes with the pill's effectiveness or you have an episode of diarrhoea or vomiting which causes the pill to pass out of your system before your body has had a chance to absorb the hormones in it, you will not ovulate and you cannot get pregnant. And if you are taking medication or are unwell you are supposed to use a barrier method as well.

The manufacturers aren't allowed to claim that it is 100% effective but with perfect use it basically is.

These myths about getting pregnant on the pill persist because women don't want to admit to not using it correctly.
