I have 3 cats, dp has 2.

Basically you can't leave them alone in the room with baby, and you have to watch them like a hawk to prevent jumping up into bassinets etc when you're all in the room.

You fundamentally cannot allow them to sleep in the room you and baby sleep in, it's SO dangerous. Cats are a suffocation risk to newborns (from covering their face, not the ridiculous stealing breath nonsense) so it's not worth it. They MUST be shut out at night and can't be left alone with baby even for a few seconds.

Yes, some people leave baby and cats alone together and nothing bad happens, but the reality is that it can and does happen to some, and the price could very well be your child's life so why on earth would you risk it.

I plan on basically baby wearing/holding most of the time in the early weeks, or popping baba in the bedroom and shutting the door (I'm in a flat so no stairs).

@sugarplum33 thanks! it's helpful.

Anyone else had to go for full bloods and glucose blood test a week before their 28 week midwife appointment? Don't remember doing it with my son. Guess it's standard in my trust now 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have my 28 week appointment tomorrow and didn't need to do this.

Do you get scanned at 28 weeks or do you not get scanned after your 20 weeks?

Ttcmumma · 08/01/2024 11:59

@evie213 no standard scans after. A consultant booked me in for growth scans next month as he said my Papp A was low but then it was confirmed he was wrong and it isn't low but they let me keep the scans booked. Not sure if that affects it? It was the midwife that requested the bloods, I see her next Monday for 28 week appointment so she wanted them done a week prior to ensure she had the results in time. Not fussed, as the more they check the better really but just seemed different to when I had my son!

Ek21 · 08/01/2024 12:01

I am 26 weeks and have the glucose test tomorrow. I'm in Ireland so not sure if it's different here, but I had my midwife appt in Dec and not sure when my next one will be but I am booked in for a scan at 32 weeks.

evie213 · 08/01/2024 12:06

@Ttcmumma ah ok. They rang me a few weeks after my 12 week scan saying I hadn't booked my growth scan which was at 28 weeks (even though nobody told me I had to do this) just confusing when thy refer to them as scans but you don't actually get one.

@Ek21 I am in the north of Ireland but tbh they don't seem to have a clue and just seem to act as if I should know everything lol

Ek21 · 08/01/2024 12:27

Yeah it can be confusing if you are ftm. I thought I had to fast for this glucose test tomorrow, but turns out you don't as I rang to double check. Even though everything I've read online says fast beforehand. I'm just winging it basically ha

Ttcmumma · 08/01/2024 12:44

I'm in east London but they're doing it all different to when I had my son 5 years ago. If it wasn't for the consultant I'd have no more NHS scans for the whole pregnancy. I had a private 4d scan on Saturday to take my son to. Yeah I didn't have to fast and it wasnt the glucose drink they just check glucose in the blood test. Maybe gestational diabetes has become a more common thing so they have a mini check and then do the drink one if anything flags up 🤷🏼‍♀️

Im not in the UK, but that is standard here in Portugal. I had them done at 26 weeks.
Mine was the full fasting, drink the horrid sugar drink (75g of sugar!!!), and get blood drawn 3 times, 1 before, 1 1h after drinking and 1 2h after drinking. I felt sick as a dog after drinking that thing!!!

I have my first (of many) 3rd tri scans next week!

Had my OB appointment today, and she decided to do a quick scan to check if she is still breech. She is. feet up at her head, as well. OB thinks it is unlikely she will turn, this late in the game.

MumDaisy1980 · 08/01/2024 14:08

@Ttcmumma I am scheduled for glucose test this Sunday. I was told to fast. The reason I need to go because I am in the 35+ category.

Not look forward to it after hearing that it's horrible drink!! I was thinking it might taste like lucuzade or sth haha.

Cora24601 · 08/01/2024 15:10

@Ttcmumma I have a glucose test tomorrow (and my 28 week appt in the 2 hr wait) I was told I needed to have one due to my mum having had diabetes so I was more at risk. I don't think it's standard in my trust only if they find sugar in urine samples or have a close relative with diabetes.

Pinkstuffs · 08/01/2024 15:45

In my trust it’s only if you are over 35, have a high BMI pre pregnancy or have a family history of diabetes or obviously if they suspect a problem.

CinderRosie · 08/01/2024 17:59

I’m 35+ and didn’t have to have the glucose test. Funny how these things varies by area!

XenaTheWarriorPrincess · 08/01/2024 18:06

@Ttcmumma my glucose test is booked for a couple of days shy of 27 weeks.

My bmi triggered mine. Bmi over 30 triggers it, as does previous GD, diabetes in the family and age. Depending on your trust, there might be other triggers.

Ttcmumma · 08/01/2024 18:08

Thanks for the info ladies, it's not the drink test they're just checking my glucose in my blood test. One test, no drink or repeat test etc. I'm 27 and can't remember my BMI but it wasn't high, no family history of diabetes. I'll see what midwife says next week at my appointment!

Mrsttcno1 · 08/01/2024 18:11

I’m wondering if my midwife is going to book me in for a glucose test tomorrow. I was originally (at my booking appointment) told I wouldn’t need one as I don’t hit any of the risk factors, but then at my 20 week scan baby’s tummy was measuring huge (90+th centile), and so the sonographer paused the scan and booked me in for a glucose test 2 weeks later, she then continued the scan and after scanning everything she told me to forget about the glucose test and cancelled it, saying that when she had measured everything further basically baby is just huge all round! Whereas I think she said the indicator for gestational diabetes is if the baby’s tummy is significantly bigger than the rest of their body so out of proportion- when she had checked my baby is all in proportion, just big🤣 however I then had a phone call at 22 weeks to say if baby is still measuring big then I’ll be booked in for a glucose test, I said I was happy to have the test if needed, and she was supposed to be calling me back with an appointment time but instead she called back to say she had checked with a consultant who said I didn’t need one!

I have a midwife appointment tomorrow so I’ll be interested to see if it’s brought up again!

Mine had a lemony flavour, but it is sickeningly sweet. I struggled to drink it, and then was pretty nauseated afterwards!
Unpleasant, but in the grand scheme of all the things in pregnancy, not the worst LOL

@ASGIRC 😆 Thanks for sharing!

As some friends have put it, " I've had worse, and I paid for it!", referring to the things you'd drink on a night out 😂😂😂

The worst bit for me was the nausea, after. But not everyone gets it. Depends on your body. I always get nauseated with sweets, so it was pretty standard for me to feel that way.

The worst part is the wait. You have to stay there for 2h! So boring!

Mrsttcno1 · 09/01/2024 11:49

Has anyone else been told that they are carrying a big baby?🥲 I’ve been with the midwife this morning and baby is currently measuring above the 97th centile, in their words “basically she’s huge”! She’s measuring 3 weeks ahead. They are going to monitor her growth closely up to 36 weeks and if she’s still measuring this big by then, we are looking at either a planned section or a planned induction at 37 weeks. Has anyone ever had this before in previous pregnancies? Or anyone else in the same boat now?😂

Ttcmumma · 09/01/2024 12:17

@Mrsttcno1 they're very often wrong. My friend has 3 kids, she was told her first was huge and may need to be induced early. He was just over 7lbs at 40 weeks. Her second they said nothing and she was 9lbs 10 and her third was only 6lb 2!

I was told my son was measuring ahead in scans the whole way through (tho bump was small) and he was a lovely 7lb at birth. Not sure how things are going size wise with this one! But the measurements are very often inaccurate

Mrsttcno1 · 09/01/2024 12:24

Thank you @Ttcmumma ! I had heard that they can be inaccurate and I suppose my concern is that the hospital were pretty clear this morning that if she is still measuring this big by 36 weeks then we will be looking at an induction/section at 37 weeks, so I’m wondering if based on the fact the measurement could be totally wrong do I say that actually I don’t want to be induced early? Or do I just go with their recommendation as my doctors? I’m really unsure! X

sugarplum33 · 09/01/2024 12:28

@Mrsttcno1 My daughter was measuring past the 99.6th centile and five weeks ahead at 35 weeks, she was apparently 7.5 pounds and full term at that point already 🤣 I was induced at 38 weeks which failed (which afterwards I found a lot of early inductions do) and I ended up with a section at 38+6. She measured 8lb12 so definitely big but not as colossal as I'd thought haha. You have to take predicted weights with a pinch of salt and also consider your own size and build. Having a big baby when you're 5'1" and very petite is different to having a big baby when you're much taller and have a wider pelvis and hips.

Ttcmumma · 09/01/2024 12:29

@Mrsttcno1 37 weeks is considered full term so it wouldn't hurt to have baby then. I guess how comfortable are you with an induction/c section? Would you really rather prefer go naturally? As then I'd probably be a bit more stern about wanting to wait atleast another week or two more than they have suggested. The main concern would be to know if there are any risks to baby waiting longer, if by chance she is the size they are estimating. If she's not at risk surely worst case scenario is a c section later on? Tho many women birth big babies vaginally, I wouldn't want to do it myself 😅 just make sure you advocate for yourself and baby, what you want and feel is best with all the risk factors taken into consideration x
