Did you have dark brown spotting/discharge in early pregnancy with a happy outcome?

I’m not feeling very hopeful. I’m about 5.5-6 weeks.

I started with dark brown discharge yesterday morning, just when I wiped and have had it since. It isn’t a lot but there seems to always be a small amount when I go to the toilet. I did have one red discharge too. I have some cramping but it’s not really bad.

I rang my GP who has said it’s likely to be an early miscarriage and I’m waiting for the EPU to call me back. Don’t really know what to expect, will I just be told to wait at home and test again?

thank you

I had brown to red spotting throughout the first trimester with both my pregnancies. Two healthy babies.

From my experience the EPU will call you in for an early scan.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/10/2023 10:16

All the way through two pregnancies, especially when I had exerted myself. Hospital at 23 weeks with second after a bleed. Both healthy babies delivered at/after full term.
Sending love X

One of each here, so it’s not a certainty! One dark brown blood for about 12 weeks and normal healthy baby, one dark brown spotting for 2 weeks and no heartbeat at the scan

SirChenjins · 12/10/2023 10:18

Yes I had brown spotting with DC1 at about 7 weeks - everything was fine, an uneventful pregnancy after that. Sending you good wishes.

Pmd1 · 12/10/2023 10:20

Yes. I am still having it most days at 13 weeks. Have had 4 scans and all is well with baby tg. Spotting is nothing to do with the baby. Try and relax, as ny Drs said, it is very common. Fingers crossed for you.

Sa11yCinnamon · 12/10/2023 10:25

I had a fair bit of bleeding last weekend and went for an early scan, baby is absolutely fine (7+3) but I was told have a heart shaped womb which can cause bleeding throughout.

There can be various different reasons for spotting and bleeding, I'm pretty annoyed your GP told you that. Please try not to worry yet (obviously much easier said than done) x

TheBirdintheCave · 12/10/2023 10:36

For me no. I had two pregnancies with brown bleeding from 6 weeks and both were miscarriages.

I hope you have a positive outcome! :)

AngryBirdsNoMore · 12/10/2023 10:38

Just here to wish you a healthy and happy outcome OP

Nutellaonall · 12/10/2023 10:38

Yep it’s called implantation bleeding. Very normal.

Sleepyquest · 12/10/2023 10:40

I had some brown spotting in my second pregnancy. Rang the midwife who said it's old blood. It was a healthy pregnancy and she's nearly 2.

Hoping it's a happy outcome for you

Olika · 12/10/2023 10:41

Don't think your GP should have said that. I had bleeding around 5-6w mark and all was fine. Don't stress about it too much, hopefully EPU will call you for a scan. Good luck!

Shinyandnew1 · 12/10/2023 10:48

I had bright red bleeding in my first pregnancy-miscarriage.

Then, brown spotting in my second-baby fine.

Then brown spotting in my third-miscarriage.

Bright red blood in my fourth-baby fine.

I don’t think you can say it’ll be fine or it’ll be over-just look after yourself and wait (horrible, I know!) and see if they’ll give you a scan.

SunshineLollipops9 · 12/10/2023 12:57

Thank you for all your replies.

I’ve not had many symptoms other than nausea which also seems to have died down a lot. Can’t help but think the worst.

EPU rang me and I have an appointment tomorrow, so will just have to try and stay positive until then.

Good luck for the scan tomorrow 🤞🏼

SirChenjins · 12/10/2023 13:06

I hope everything goes well for you tomorrow.

Alloveragain3 · 12/10/2023 13:07

I had some brown spotting at 8 weeks and then some red/brown blood at 10 weeks (or so).

I was expecting the worst but all was fine.

Both times it was after carrying my heavy toddler and shopping and no cause was found when I went for a scan.

webster1987 · 12/10/2023 13:08

Yeah I had brown spotting on and off for a couple of weeks and all was fine. I believe red blood is when it's possibly more concerning.

lavenderlou · 12/10/2023 13:08

I had it for a few days, accompanied by cramps at about the same time. An early scan showed an empty sac. All worked out well and I carried to term.

Marylou62 · 12/10/2023 13:12

I'm very sorry for all the pregnancies that didn't make it...
OP... I had bright red, pain and brown spotting with all my pregnancies at all stages... I'm lucky that all 3 went on to be successful...
Sending hope and hugs...x

Musicaltheatremum · 12/10/2023 13:13

Yes, they are 30 and 28 now! Good luck.

Mangotango39 · 12/10/2023 13:48

I had lots of bleeding. Brown, red, pink , you name it!

And NO symptoms first trimester . 22 weeks now.

I previously had a MC and there was absolutely no bleeding. So it definitely does not mean bad news all the time x

SunshineLollipops9 · 13/10/2023 17:39

had my appointment today. Thankfully, it was a threatened miscarriage and we even saw a tiny little heartbeat ❤️

Ahh that’s great news! Hope everything carries on well for you 😊

mintich · 13/10/2023 17:57

I had it 4 times, 1 was a miscarriage, 3 were healthy babies!

mintich · 13/10/2023 17:58

Oh I'm glad your appointment went well
