Low folate?

I’m 32 weeks pregnant and recent bloods show my folate at 3.1 with the normal range being 2.4 - 17.

The last folate test I had was 4 years ago when pregnant with my first and my folate was 9.7, with a different lab range of 1.9 - 25.

3.1 seems very low to me, and according to Google a deficiency. GP has marked no further action.

Has anyone else experienced this?

If it's within the normal range the doctor gave you I wouldn't worry too much about it, but you can always buy folate supplements to take if it would reassure you.

Hey!

My folate levels were tested at 16 weeks due to folate deficiency symptoms (had low folate with DD2 and also last year when I wasn’t pregnant) my result was 2.4 and I was prescribed 5mg folic acid, I was then tested again to check levels at 23 weeks and they were 3.0 so was told to keep taking the stronger dose of 5mg as they are still low x

Ask to be tested for the MTFHR gene.

Take extra folate.

@am3017 I saw my consultant yesterday who said normal range in third trimester starts at 1.5 so no action needed. That’s a fob off then I assume!

I’m only in second trimester so not sure if that makes a difference to guidelines but even though my levels had raised slightly between 16 and 23 weeks my MW said it still wasn’t enough at 3.0!

Or maybe it's that normal range starts at 1.5 and yours is 3.1 so there's nothing to worry about?

3.1 isn't a deficiency in the third trimester according to Google. Google says the normal range in the third trimester is 1.4-20.7, so more or less in line with your consultant.

Sorry, I think you're worrying about nothing, but if you are worried then surely the answer is just to take extra folate supplements.
