Bleeding / spotting

Hi everyone

I started light bleeding around 8 weeks pregnant. It alternated between a few light bleeds and spotting. I had a reassurance scan and baby was fine with a strong heartbeat.

The EPU think I had a hematoma.

My problem is, that the spotting hasn't ever really stopped and I'm nearly 11 weeks. I got to points where i thought it had stopped but it comes back and is sometimes heavier than others. It's usually brown (sorry).

Anyone else? Because it's not a heavy bleed and i'm pain free along with the fact i had a scan, nobody seems particularly concerned about it.

Hey,
It’s likely the blood collection which they noticed, however it’s difficult to know until you’re re-scanned. Most of the time the pregnancy continues well, even with bleeding.
Has your dating scan been arranged? If it’s soon, you can wait for it. If not, then maybe just call the early pregnancy unit to see what they would advise.
Fingers crossed all will be completely fine. It’s so common for women to bleed, but best to get a second opinion from professional to get some further re-assurance. Just bear in mind that something you won’t have other symptoms, like pain if something has gone wrong. It’s different from patient to patient sadly.

It's not a miscarriage i'm worried about since the baby was fine tbh.

And i didn't know it was possible to have a miscarriage without pain? I've had one before and know how it feels, this is nothing like that, thanks for your reply.

Yes, every miscarriage can be different unfortunately. Some women don’t feel pain or have any bleeding. I know people who’ve had more than 2 miscarriages & they had different symptoms.
Hopefully it will settle soon. You’re reaching second trimester soon, which is when bleeding/spotting or discharge normally stops.

Hi @Lithgow2000

I had a hematoma in my pregnancy and mine started with a heavy bleed around 5/6 weeks. I continued to have spotting/light bleeding which varied in colour from light pink to brown up until around about 13/14 weeks. I had a number of scans which showed baby was fine and unaffected, however the worry was always still there. I had no pain with the spotting/bleeding either. Feel free to message me or ask any questions if you wish. I hope everything goes well with your pregnancy! 😊

Hi op, like op has said every miscarriage is different as I've had 2 and they were painless... however regarding your spotting it is common for women to have light bleeding/spotting. Just wait it out till your re scanned

I appreciate your response but given I had a scan when it was at it's worst and reassurance from several midwifes, i didn't really want to read that it's a miscarriage and only wanted advice on a hematoma. Thanks

Maybe you didn't read my post but i was scanned and baby is fine. I'm asking for experiences of Hematoma not to get more advice/reassurance when i've already had it from professionals.

Thank you so much!! This is very much appreciated. I was just told it was likely a hematoma and not given much more information so wasn't sure how long it should last xx

Hey, sorry it read like I meant it could be a miscarriage. Not what I meant at all. My main point was to seek professional advice again if you were concerned, as everyone has different experiences.

No problem, but no I was asking for experiences from those who also had hematomas. And like i say, i've sought advice and nobody is overly concerned. Just not sure what to expect or when it will end. Thanks

Okay, that makes sense. This was my experience with bleeding:
During my second pregnancy, I never had a confirmed haematoma with scan, but had light red bleeding in first trimester. Think it started around 9 weeks and lasted for a few weeks. Phoned midwife, who was not worried, so never had an early scan as she said it will stop. It did stop around 12-13 weeks. No pain either & I went to term fine with a healthy baby. But this was during the pandemic time, so not sure if they just couldn’t scan everyone in early pregnancy.
During first loss, I had no pain, no bleeding & also no scan. Just confirmed with doctors through bloods.

Thank you! Mine isn't a confirmed hematoma either since it had already started when i was scanned but she said that's the most likely explanation. It was only really 2 very light bleeds and then lots of spotting.

Sorry for your loss. It seems very cruel to have no symptoms and surprise you like that :(

It’s difficult, isn’t it? They sometimes never know why we bleed during pregnancy.

Thank you. It’s just a long wait until the 12 week scan & we had no warning signs. But the team were very supportive & gave us treatment options on the day.

So sorry 😞
I'm glad i had the reassurance of seeing baby on a scan or this would be very stressful. But strong heart and measuring the correct size 🤞
