Pregnancy of unknown location

Hi, I'm looking for any advice/similar stories. I found out I was pregnant last month but had a two day bleed 5 days later so assumed I had had an early misscariage. I then went to the EPU a few days later and had a scan where they couldn't see anything so was told it was a pregnancy of unknown location.
I had my bloods taken which can back at 20 so very low. 48 hours later they came back at 21 then 48 hours they came back at 27 so I was told to come back again in a week for another scan and more bloods.
I had my scan on Friday which showed a small cyst on my ovary where the egg has released, the lining of my uterus had also thickened since the last scan but they still could not locate the pregnancy. I was told I could have the methotrexate injection once my bloods were back but as they had gone up again to 43, it got passed on to a consultant who advised against the injection and told me to come back in another week. By my dates I am around 7 weeks and 4 days. I have had 4 straight forward pregnancies and had never heard of a pregnancy of unknown location. The doctor said it could still be an normal early pregnancy, an ectopic pregnancy or a failing pregnancy but I am worried if it progresses too far I could end up losing a tube.

How many weeks pregnant should you be?
When I had an ectopic / PUL they were just concerned because the numbers didn't double in 48 hours x

Going from the date of my last period I'm 7 weeks and 4 days but I didn't track ovulation. It's just confusing because they keep giving me different information. They have said they still can't rule out ectopic but they also haven't said it's not a viable pregnancy yet which I thought would be the case with my hcg being so low

Yes unfortunately the levels are extremely low for 7 weeks :(
They told me that if levels are not doubling then there's something wrong.
Ask for regular scanning and not just the bloods x

I think they are sending me for another scan on Friday. It's just mentally draining, I thought I had an early misscariage so I processed that. Then the nurse basically told me on Friday after the second scan that it was likely ectopic but my hcg was too low to see anything so I stayed at the hospital to have the injection but the consultant for some reason said no and wanted me to wait another week so I feel like I'm going through it all over again. All my pregnancy symptoms went the day the bleed startedwhich was nearly 3 weeks ago now. I've also just had all the symptoms of ovulation as well so I really don't know what's going on x

Hi I'm going through something similar. Was everything OK on the second scan?

Hope you are OK

Hi, when I had the scan on Friday they found a gestational sack that wasn't on the previous scans so I'm due another scan again on Friday. They seemed to think it looked like a new pregnancy. They also told me to come back on the Sunday for more bloods.
In the mean time I had a gynaecologist phone me on Saturday asking me to go into the hospital so I went and basically got told by her that it was still a pregnancy of unknown location, likely ectopic and the sac was probably a pseudosac so I needed the methotrexate injection on Monday.
I was quite upset but went in on Monday and luckily the nurse who I had seen on Friday didn't agree with this and asked for a second opinion. I ended up seeing a really nice consultant who told me that in his opinion the pregnancy is a uterine pregnancy and that the person who did the ultrasound is very experienced and they also think it's a uterine pregnancy so we went back to the original plan of a rescan this Friday. I'm not holding out any false hope. Nobody really seems to know what's going on for sure but I really don't want to have the methotrexate unless it is absolutely necessary.

Wow what a rollercoaster OP, hope you’re okay. I had something similar with my first child and after an agonising wait everything did turn out to be normal, fingers crossed for you.

I'm ok, just hoping to finally get some answers at this next scan

Any update? Xx

That's really rubbish, especially when you're getting different advice from so many directions.
I had a similar-ish situation last year, PUL with low hormone levels. It was believed the pregnancy passed naturally but figures kept going up very slowly. It was eventually discovered to be ectopic hidden behind a cyst. Took a long time to get the whole thing resolved.
Hopefully you get the answers.you need soon!

I know this is a very old thread but OP could you shed some light at what happened at the scan? I’m currently going through exactly the same and I could have written this post myself x

LoJack · 13/05/2025 20:24

@HJB97 im also going through something similar. Do you mind letting me know how yours resolved?

JupiterDaze · 13/05/2025 20:55

@LoJack hi do you mind me asking what you’re going through at the moment? I’m approximately 5 weeks but have been getting very faint positive tests for a week and a half, no progression at all but not disappearing either. I haven’t had any bleeding yet either and have started having lower back pain and nausea. I have a scan at EPU tomorrow but I’m so upset that I’m probably having a chemical, this will be chemical number 2 for me 😔
the worst part is the not knowing what’s going on and waiting about for something to happen

LoJack · 14/05/2025 17:13

@JupiterDaze sorry for the late reply! I’m pretty sure mine is an ectopic. I had negative tests and then started what I thought was my period a few days later. I started tracking ovulation and had strong results so that prompted me to take a pregnancy test which came back positive. I’m still getting positive results which aren’t getting any lighter or darker and definitely aren’t as dark as they should be for 6+ weeks. I’ve had a scan and they’ve said it’s likely ectopic but they can’t find it yet. So just looking to hear stories of how this gets resolved - hopefully without the need for surgery! I’m going back again for bloods tomorrow as that should give an indication of whats going on. Have you requested bloods? You should push to have them 48hrs apart and be mindful of the warning signs of ectopic as little line progression can be a warning sign. That said 5 weeks is still quite early and I know some women just take a little longer for their HCG to rise - fingers crossed for you!
