Hi,

I am having my baby in an week and I’m wanting to exclusively pump. I will pack formula as back up incase it doesn’t go to plan. I bought the Medela hands free pump and I’m wondering do I take this in to hospital with me and do you pump as soon as baby is born? Also, I have started collecting colostrum and wondering do I put this in to bottle when in hospital or feed from the syringe? How much roughly does a newborn feed? Thanks this is all new to me and so confusing!

You will need to speak to your hospital as they are all different. Mine doesn’t have anywhere for you to access sterilising equipment but you can ask to use their pumps if available and they will store the milk in the fridge and you ask for it when needed. Others may do things differently though. Keep the colostrum in the syringes and the hospital should be able to keep them in a fridge until you need them, just feed straight from the syringe. Babies tummy is around the size of a cherry to start with so they will have a small amount every few hours.
