Been referred to feral medicine and terrified

Hi,

A scan has picked up cysts on both the baby’s kidneys and I have been referred to feral medicine. The appointment is tomorrow. So worried, everything online suggest worse case scenario. Is a referral to feral medicine always a sign that something is very wrong?

Fetal medicine. Hopefully they are just being very thorough. Am sure it is scary but so good to get any info you can as early as possible so that baby can get any extra help it needs before it's even born.

Foetal/ fetal medicine. Feral means wild. 🤣

Hopefully they are just being cautious here. I don't have any experience so can't comment really. I'd just say that I hope all goes well for you.

I am sure you are correct. Fingers crossed it is something treatable and they will get a head start. I am already almost 30 weeks and just upset I got this far only to have things go wrong now. Have you ever been seen by them? I don’t know what to expect from the appointment

Best of luck.
stay away from Dr Google.
take a notebook and write the key points down. Will help formulate questions.
best wishes.

I attended a fetal medicine clinic as a shadowing opportunity for work this week. 8 parents, all with different issues, babies fine/management plan that meant they would be fine in place.

It obviously COULD be a problem, but the whole point of the referral is for them to double check and confirm how to treat any problems. Please try not to panic.

That’s good to know that some babies can be treated or managed. I know there is not really much people can say until we have a diagnosis, at least we will find out soon enough. Just frustrating to get through the anomaly scan thinking everything is fine only for this to flag up ten weeks later. As an aside, Fetal must be an interesting branch of medicine (when you are not a patient).

That's because there is only a limited window of time in which the post can be edited. It's a few minutes, but I don't know precisely how long. After that the window closes and the edit option disappears.

Personally, I don't think it should be time barred, but it is.
