I'm pregnant with my first and I've had my booking in appointment but my first scan isn't until I'm 16 weeks. Has anyone else had this experience? I feel like it's too far into pregnancy for a first scan since anything could go wrong and I won't know

That seems far too late. I think NHS say the first scan has to be between 11 and 14 weeks. Most seem to be around 13 weeks at the moment.

The first scan is a dating scan and is done till week 14 as 10-14 weeks when foetuses are at the same length. There must be a mistake. I’d reach out to the midwifes and ask to rebook.

Ultrasound scans in pregnancy

Find out about ultrasound baby scans, including the dating scan and anomaly scan, to check for abnormalities in the baby during pregnancy.

That definitely sounds like there’s been a mistake. At your dating scan you should be offered screening for Down’s syndrome, edwards syndrome and patau’s syndrome and I don’t think this combined screening can be done after 14 weeks. I would definitely contact your midwife.

Nhs dating scans are between 10-14 weeks. Please contact your midwife and let her know about how late your appointment is.

I recently had a very late booking appt at almost 12 weeks. I was then given a scan date of almost 14 weeks which panicked me but I was reassured that they could complete all the tests. The original scan date I was given was at 15 weeks but I phoned the number on the letter, explained the situation and they were able to give me an earlier appointment.

Please phone the scanning hospital and your midwife.

Are you sure that’s the date for your scan and not just your 16 week midwife appointment? Scan date will normally come via a letter from the hospital.
