Low placenta

I have been for my 20 weeks scan today and found out my placenta is low, got another scan at 32weeks to see if this has changed, just wondering if I could get some more details from anyone who has been through this because I pretty scared right now!?

I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks. I was very concerned. However the sonographer explained most low lying placentas move by 32 weeks. Mine did.

Don’t worry. Most move up by themselves.

PurBal · 20/09/2023 20:55

Something like 90% move. Try not worry. Is it “abutting” the cervix?

Even if they don’t move, you just have a scheduled c-section a little earlier than usual. I had a very low placenta and vasa previa, baby was fine.

buckingmad · 20/09/2023 20:56

Mine moved

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 20/09/2023 21:00

Just been through this, most will move!

I was told I had it at 20 week scan, I had a growth scan at 28 weeks and it had already moved, but they would have done another at 32 weeks if it hadn't.

As long as you're not bleeding it shouldn't be an issue. If it doesn't move, you'll have a c-section a little early (36-37 weeks), only earlier if it causes issues such as bleeding. Did they say if posterior or anterior? It's easier for the c-section if posterior as isn't 'in the way'. Not a problem if anterior, they just have to decide whether to cut through the placenta to get to baby or maybe will have to cut differently which could alter position of your scar.

Thank you I never had this with my first born, but these comments have eased my mind

They actually didn't say if it was posterior or anterior, if im honest I dint get told much other than I need to go back at 32weeks to check my placenta

I had a low lying anterior placenta which moved by about 30 weeks. It's very rare that it stays low, but I know it can be pretty scary to be told anything unexpected about your pregnancy x

Mine also moved up by 32 weeks and went from ‘anterior low’ to ‘anterior high.’
