Is it possible to eat too many apples? Don't laugh.

I literally eat about 4-8 apples a day. My chocolate cravings have been entirely supplanted by apples (occasionally paired with a small piece of cheddar cheese). Will my baby be born with an apple for a head?

maybe

snowleopard · 03/03/2008 16:01

Well it sounds healthier than the main pg craving I had - mini bakewells

It might give you the runs I suppose but I don't think 4-8 apples is that bad. After all you are meant to eat 5-10 fruit and veg a day.

fuzzywuzzy · 03/03/2008 16:06

you might get the runs, but baby should be fine.

LadyOfWaffle · 03/03/2008 16:23

Blimey - are you me? I am craving apples like mad, eat about 5 a day. Definatly better than chocolate/crisps, might give you an upset tummy if you aren't a big fruit eater.

yurt1 · 03/03/2008 16:26

ds1 will eat 2 packets in one go if we don't hide them fast enough. I think that's too many for him. They're high in phenols I think, but that shouldn't be a problem for you.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2008 16:31

It's not great to eat apples (or oranges) all day - particularly for your teeth. If you can, try to have your acidic fruits all at one time.

Also, if I was eating this many apples, I'd probably be trying to stick to organic ones, just for fear of pesticides/insecticides.

choosyfloosy · 03/03/2008 16:33

No problem food wise, but acidic for your teeth - have a mouthful/glassful of water afterwards to neutralise it.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 03/03/2008 16:33

Hee hee - my mother craved oranges when she was pregnant with me - ate around a pocket every 2 days. I'm not sure if this is related, but when I peel oranges or if they are being peeled around me, it makes me sneeze!

ThePFJ · 03/03/2008 17:50

LOL Babyroo!

I used to eat 8 a day when I was in late teens and on a diet. I lived on apples and ryvita for a while. Never did me any harm (lost too much weight, but if you are eating other stuff, which I presume you are, then no worries!). Better than cake I am sure (which I ate all through my pregnancy and am still craving now 8 weeks later...).

hopefully · 04/03/2008 09:14

Glad to hear the apples aren't going to do me any harm (as long as I brush my teeth).

I will continue merrily munching away on my (organic, yes) apples.

I ate three mangoes yesterday but am more worried about expense of feeding this habit than health risks tbh!

Expectant · 04/03/2008 09:53

I had read somewhere that a craving for apples pointed to a lack or need for certain vitamins and minerals. From what I remember it was calcium plus some other things (short term memory not great at the moment). I have also had a craving for apples but can't really see this is a bad thing - the magnum ice cream craving seems much worse!

rara67 · 04/03/2008 10:17

Just a thought, my DS suffered from constipation and when I took him to the GP she put it down to too much apple juice. Apples contain pectin (the stuff you use to set jam), so you may want to try a range of fruits...

dizzydixies · 04/03/2008 11:01

I was kiwi fruits with dd1 and oranges with dd2 - with this one its orange capri sun juice cartons!?!?? I had 8 yesterday

My2Weegirls · 04/03/2008 11:05

i craved apples with my 1st preg too - apples, apple juice, apple tarts, apples sweets.

eating apples is supposed to help prevent asthma with babies (didn' with dd1)

Carey87 · 04/03/2008 14:03

my mum used to eat gallons and gallons of strawberry's

birth mark on my back is strwaberry shaped! lol!!!

VintageGardenia · 04/03/2008 15:07

Interestingly, I am almost the exact shape of a mango.

hopefully · 04/03/2008 15:09

So I can safely assume either I or the baby will end up apple shaped. Hmmm....

One of my best friends ate so many carrots when she was pregnant that she actually turned orange . I (rather cruelly ) nicknamed her Dave (as in David Dickinson, the orange antiques bloke)

She was eating upwards of 2 bags of them a day, it was a really, really strong craving that she couldnt ignore.

She went to the doctor who said it wasn't a problem. In fact Dr apparently said "you're lucky the craving isn't for cream cakes"

Sayuri · 04/03/2008 15:14

with me its pineapple -- it REALLY helps when I'm feel nausious.

bilblio · 04/03/2008 15:36

I craved apples too, I would eat 2-3 a day, which is loads for me as I get allergic reactions to them.
DD is 7mo, she doesn't look like an apple, but they're one of the few foods she doesn't like. She pulls the best face when we try to feed her them
