Pain at 17 weeks, had scan and DH thinks he knows baby's sex

So at nearly 18 weeks, I've been having a bit of crampy stretchy pain recently which seemed to get worse yesterday so I went to the MAU to have to checked.

Baby is fine and we had a scan and saw them. Baby was very active and lying face down and all I could really make out was the back/spine. But DH reckons he 'saw something' that indicates we are having a boy! And I dunno why but its annoyed me a bit. Not the fact that we could be having a boy but more how does he know what he saw?! It wasn't clear at all imo.

We do intend to find out at 20 weeks scan but its going to be our secret but now I feel he's ruined the surprise for us both!

Not sure what the point of this post was just wanted to rant but I suppose if anyone else is suffering long term cramping then it could just be totally normal!

You were finding out in 2 weeks anyway, I don't see how he has ruined any surprise.

Mangotango39 · 05/09/2023 12:58

Sorry I'm with above - not sure what the difference knowing today of in 2 weeks is? X

Mangotango39 · 05/09/2023 12:58

Or was there a gender reveal planned actually? Then I would be mad haha!

He might have seen the umbilical cord. He's not trained to decipher ultrasounds.

PickledScrump · 05/09/2023 13:18

More likely he saw the cord. You’d need to see a “potty shot” to be able to see the sex, 17 weeks it’s all still developing so it’s not likely he’d see anything sticking out at that stage. Even with a potty shot it can be difficult to make out if you don’t know what you’re looking at.

Daisypod · 05/09/2023 13:57

Really?!

Mangotango39 · 05/09/2023 14:00

Oh it may still be a girl then - you'll only know for sure soon and still a surprise 😊

stressbucket1 · 05/09/2023 14:01

Yeah I wouldn't take his word for it. At 17 weeks it can be difficult for a trained sonographer to tell the sex when they are actually looking for it. Your DP won't be able to tell with any certainty at a passing glance. He does have a 50/50 chance of being right though

Janey3090 · 05/09/2023 19:10

I wouldn’t take his word for it, he may have been seeing the cord. I had a scan at nearly 18 weeks too and also thought I may have seen boy parts… my baby was a girl!

thecatsthecats · 05/09/2023 19:36

I had a passing glance of what I thought meant a girl during the 20 week scan, only for the sonographer to very clearly to zone in on a boy.

He doesn't know - if he's right, it was because he's got a 50% chance of being right, not because he's some sort of sonographer savant.
