No hyperemesis gravidarum during my second pregnancy, is this cause for concern?

I'm really concerned at 6 weeks pregnant that I barely feel any pregnancy symptoms. It's the furthest thing from how my first pregnancy went with HG starting at 4 weeks and being hospitalised a couple of times and having an early ultra sound at 7 weeks to check baby was ok. I continue taking pregnancy tests out of being paranoid to check it still says pregnant which it does. My mum had severe HG with her 3 pregnancies so assumed I would follow. I am still breastfeeding my 15month boy so don't know if this will impact hormones in anyway? Is it cause for concern, I've not had any form of morning sickness so far. Really hard to relax when my first pregnancy experience was the opposite to what I am feeling this time around.

No it’s not a concern - I had it with my first two pregnancies (6 months of it with each) but mild to no sickness with my third!

congratulations 🥳

1st time round I was sick from 4 weeks literally day of my positive test.

This time round it was about 7 weeks before I started being sick. I have struggled with sicknese this time round but probably not quite as bad. I'm 20 weeks now, healthy scans and feeling movement

For reference, 1st pregnancy was a girl, boy this time round.

I wouldn't worry.

pythongreenporsche · 03/09/2023 16:24

My sickness with DD1 was relentless- every single day of the pregnancy altho never HG bad. With DD2 I wasn't sick at all until the very end

abbs1 · 03/09/2023 16:44

With my first it was awful HG from 4 weeks and spent months and months in hospital on drips and multiple medications etc. Had a little boy.
2nd pregnancy I took xonvea from 5 weeks and felt sick from 6 weeks but was only physically sick once throughout pregnancy and had a little girl.

May I ask how you are now @cmopri ?

I'm experiencing the same now I'm 6+3 and nausea and odd times being sick. I was in hospital by this point with my first!

cmopri · 01/02/2024 13:35

@BeautyAndTheBump1 Hi, I wasn't so lucky with my last pregnancy and went for an early private scan where we had sad news unfortunately. I think signs of sickness that your having now is a really good thing. I've just found out I'm pregnant again 5weeks1day, waiting for sickness to start but desperately trying to think positive! Wishing you well with your pregnancy and remember these symptoms are good signs.

@cmopri I'm so sorry to hear that. But also congratulations finding out you are pregnant again. Fingers crossed you can escape HG and have a happy healthy pregnancy this time. I have been debating on going for a private scan this weekend and think I'm going to book one now to check as it makes me so worried I don't have HG!

cmopri · 01/02/2024 15:27

@BeautyAndTheBump1 thank you very much! Ah I hope we are both lucky enough to dodge terrible sickness and hospital stays whilst having a healthy pregnancy. Sending you all the positive thoughts. I have booked an early scan for 7+4 to have an appointment earlier than the usual 12weeks. The wait feels hard so do what feels right to you, and if that helps you will have a date to focus on 😊 x

I'd call it a cause for celebration!

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 01/02/2024 17:01

@cmopri yes fingers crossed! Do you have any symptoms yet? I have such nausea and sick here and there but because I'm comparing it to the HG pregnancy it's what makes me nervous. Debating whether to go for a scan on Sunday at 6+6 or to wait for the following weekend and go at 7+5. My original plan was to have one at 7+5 until the HG didn't kick in!

Pickles2023 · 01/02/2024 17:03

First pregnancy i was hospitalised multiple times with HG and started at 4 weeks...

Im currently 23 weeks with second...no sickness at all..still none..

cmopri · 01/02/2024 17:23

@BeautyAndTheBump1 symptoms in terms of tiredness and feeling a little nausea but no sickness. When did your sickness start? I've been exactly the same as you with compassion to HG which sparks the worrying. I would suggest maybe 7+5 for early scan if you can, as I’ve been phoning to discuss advice and from 7weeks you’re more likely to see the heartbeat.

@Pickles2023 oh my goodness amazing!! This fills me with so much hope. Pleased for you and hope the no sickness continues for you. Thanks so much for sharing.

@newnamesix absolutely a help reading this. So lovely to hear you've gone on to have 3 healthy pregnancies despite HG appearing, disappearing and then coming back worse. Appreciate these comments for some kind of reassurance it's all very possible to have a successful pregnancy still.

I wasn’t sick with my single first or twins after.
Some people are some not.

Y0URSELF · 01/02/2024 17:35

Lots of women don’t get HG in second or subsequent pregnancies, especially if it’s with the same father. I don’t think doctors even know the reason for this - so much of pregnancy is unknown to medical research !

so please try not to worry OP.

cmopri · 01/02/2024 17:47

@Y0URSELF this is so interesting I didn't realise that! Thank you. This thread definitely helps hear of others experience

I had dreadful round the clock sickness first 33 plus weeks with 1 and 2, but 3rd pregnancy I was extremely sick , but just for one piddly weekend.

LittleRedY0shi · 01/02/2024 17:53

I'm another one who had HG during my first pregnancy and just 'regular' pregnancy sickness during the second one (despite the second one being twins, so double the hormones!)

It's hard to get your head around. During the HG people reassured me that every pregnancy is different and I might not suffer like that next time, but I figured if you're unlucky enough to have it in the first place you must be more susceptible - just look at Kate Middleton, after all. Was pleased and relieved to discover that's not necessarily the case!

elliejjtiny · 01/02/2024 17:57

I've never had HG but with my first I was being sick 20 times a day and lost 3 stone. With my 2nd I was terrified something was wrong because I was "only" being sick 5 times a day.

cmopri · 01/02/2024 18:14

So helpful to learn of real examples rather than health care professionals tell you all pregnancies are different because naturally you compare what you've known before. @LittleRedY0shi amazing to hear you didn't have HG during a twin pregnancy!

I had HG in my pregnancy with Dd (with multiple hospitalizations early). Had a 1 year age gap and no HG in that pregnancy (some sickness but not till much later and was much much more manageable). Then a two year ago gap and unfortunately had HG again for DS2! So…it definitely can be different in different pregnancies. I spent so much of this one convinced I must be having a girl as it matched my earliest…but nope!

Hope things go well for you op x

cmopri · 01/02/2024 19:38

@Callmemummynotmaaa thanks for explaining your situation. Interesting to know sickness if it does start can also be much later. These first few weeks I am obsessing over how far along I am/symptoms but not wanting to be this way. There really is no pattern with pregnancies. Thanks x

This happened to me ! I had HG with my first and I was so ill with it. It was desperate. 15 months later was pregnant again and yes I was sick on n off throughout pregnancy but not HG ! I had 2 wee boys so god knows why it happened with one and not the other ! X

cmopri · 01/02/2024 20:01

@Surroundedbyfools aw I'm so pleased you had an easier time for your second pregnancy especially whilst running round after a little one! It's so unpredictable what way it will go even when your in it x
