Hi, I’ve just had a phone call from a midwife to tell me that I have gestational diabetes.
Can anyone who has it / had it please tell me their experiences.
I had complications last time which meant my son had to go into scbu and I really do wanted to avoid it this time around 😔
What does this mean for me and my baby? And will she be really huge and need support after birth?

Feeling really upset and worried.

I'm starting Metformin today, feel kind of deflated and worried about side effects. Is it awful? I am starting with one tablet after dinner, it's the slow release type. It's only my fasting readings that are high (varying up to 6). Any advice?

Why did they decide to put you on metformin if you don’t mind me asking…..
My bloods still seem to be well managed with diet but as I’m in hospital now there isn’t much choice of food (and no exercise) and there is the odd spike. They gave me sugar on my cereal this morning as a mistake 😞.

Just wondering why and at what point they decided to put you on meds?

Hi @GreenAventurinee I just couldn't get my fasting reading down sadly. All of the others were within range. They started with 1x 250g metformin, I'm not taking 2x 250g as it hadn't gone down sufficiently with 1. Still up this morning so will try again tonight then increase to 3. It's a bit frustrating given my post dinner is fine. Hope you're doing ok, hospital food is rough at the best of times, without GD as well!

I'm on metformin 3x per day at 500mg. No side effects and have made my post meal readings much more manageable. I can even have the odd treat which is lovely.
I had to take it to get pregnant, 4x 500mg in one hit and that did give me a bit of a dodgy tummy but not for that long.

I suspect they reduce me to 2x per day at my next appt as my readings are consistently now on the lower side and I'm having to eat more sugar/carbs to keep them above 5.3.

@Viralsunflower that's really interesting to hear because I have been REALLY sweaty on my face today and almost a bit shaky this morning and thought it could be the two tablets making me a bit too low. I have a phone call tomorrow so I'll ask them.

I get hypos outside of pregnancy (but have been assured I'm not diabetic...) and if my blood sugar is too low I get shaky, faint, sweaty, light headed, and feel like I'll pass out. Shovelling in some carbs and sugar resolves it. It sounds a bit like that? So maybe your dose is a bit high
