I have put on 5kg so a stone and I'm only now 24 weeks pregnant, I feel awful! Just looking for advice, is this too much? Is this normal? It is causing me a lot of anxiety.

I've put on a stone and I'm 14 weeks. Your weight gain sounds about right, mine is a bit much but the midwife isn't worried. Don't worry, it's all part of the ride. If you're planning to breastfeed, good news! It all falls right off.

Oh, and I'm 5'2" btw so I'm working my way towards being spherical 😂

Thankyou so much for sharing! My midwife hasn't weighed me since my first appointment so I've had no insight as to if this is normal!

I think they'd be worried if you weren't gaining weight, but that's rarely an issue. I think the ideal is 5lbs or less in the first trimester and then roughly 1lb a week after that. My goal is to stop treating crisps as their own food group 😅

Very normal if not on the lower end. You properly put weight on at the end. If normal BMI 12-18kgs at the end js very normal.

You have a lot more blood, placenta, fluid, baby etc.

Hi
I’m 21 weeks and I’ve put on a stone. I was in the gym 5 times a week and always on a training diet pre pregnancy which has completely gone out the window. The less fat you have the more you will gain. Don’t stress!

Dillydollydingdong · 31/08/2023 18:57

Absolutely normal. I put on 3st in both of my pregnancies. You just have to make sure it comes off again afterwards. It took me a year though! 😁

It’s normal - most people gain about 2 stone during pregnancy, and you’re about halfway so a stone is right.

newmum2be94 · 31/08/2023 19:02

I put on 3st when I was pregnant with my second (and last!) baby, I ate whatever I wanted and loved it haha. Hard work to lose it after the birth but I wouldn't worry about the weight gain, we are all different

TinyTeacher · 31/08/2023 19:46

Absolutely normal. I gained less than that for first pregnancy, but a little over that this time. I had an extra scan at 28 weeks and they said I had more fluid than average so I've got a big bump and have gained a bitof extra weight. Nobody is at all concerned. I assume baby measured normally at 20 week scan?

Remember that by the end baby will weigh about 3kg and placenta not much less. You also carry fluid (couple of kilos) and you have extra muscle around the uterus itself. You also store some extra fat to prepare for breastfeeding.

Last 2 pregnancies I've found the weight drops off very quickly, hope it does this time!

I put on way more than this -3 stone in total during the pregnancy. Throughout the pregnancy the midwives assured me that it wasn’t too much. 2 weeks after giving birth and I’ve lost half of it.
unless the midwife raises an issue don’t worry.

Oldermum84 · 31/08/2023 20:11

I'm 27 weeks and have gained 1.5 stone.

Pitstop1986 · 31/08/2023 20:13

According to my pregnancy weight gain app, at 24 weeks, a "normal, healthy" weight gain is between 5kg and 7.7kg, so you're actually on track, but at the lower end of normal. I'd take these guidelines with a pinch of salt as all women put weight on differently at at different times during pregnancy.

This weight gain isn't fat on your body!!! It's baby, placenta, heavier uterus, extra blood volume, amniotic fluids, extra bodily fluids, even extra food/poop weight in your bowels as your digestion has slowed.

If it gives you any reassurance, I weighed myself the day before I went into labour with my daughter and then a week after she was born I was 10kg down. She only weighed 3kg of this!

RedRobyn2021 · 31/08/2023 20:24

I put 3.5 stone on when I was pregnant, I was starving all the time but ate a lot of fruit, cheese, fish, eggs... basically tried to avoid Upf and junk food but put on vast amounts of weight. It freaked me out massively. I was walking 7-10K steps a day up till 41 weeks.

After DD was born i immediately lost a stone, then 4-6 weeks after bleeding stopped it was something like 9 pounds more. Then the last 1stone5 came off by the time I was 9m pp without even slightly trying, I was doing a lot less exercise too. I did exclusively breastfeed though and that definitely helped.
