Is this your first or second baby? I think that for first babies, you can become engaged at about 35 weeks without it meaning you are about to give birth. And sometimes they can become 'disengaged'

I'm sure leese or mears will be able to give you the definitive answer.

My dd was engaged at around the same time - they can become disengaged, and if my experience is anything to go by they can cause lots of pelvic pain by being engaged !

Oh the joys of pregnancy !

My dd head was fully engaged around this time. I was told a probably wouldn't reach my due date and that the labour would be relativly easy. I went 10 days over and labour only started after they did a membrane scrape, they had to break my waters and labour was hellish!!!!! I'll not listen to them this time!

Was engaged at 27 weeks with number 3! Born at 38 weeks though.

As it was the GP who said the head was engaged I would tend not to believe it!!
If it is, it is perhaps a bit earlier than the textbooks would say, but it does happen. It does not mean anything untoward.

dd2 engaged at 26 weeks and stayed there but still went 8 days over and they had to give me a 'sweep' to get things started.

Tinker is right - I was told that my baby?s haed was engaged at around 32 weeks and went home worrying that she would be prem - only to be told two weeks later that it was no longer engaged ( or had not been totally engaged the last time after all). Don?t worry about it - doesn?t mean that the baby is imminent or will neceaarily be early - mine arrived on time. Good Luck

Yes my first was engaged at around 33 weeks but didn't go onto have him till 41+1 weeks!

Second only partially engaged late on but that is much more common.

sammyj · 23/11/2002 11:43

Thank you all for the advice. We'll just have to wait and see then.

Sorry I didn't get back to you all. Baby George arrived 9 days late but perfect. He's 6 months old now and I love being a mum.
