I’m going mad, I swear! Had huge bleed (fresh red, specks of mini clots) at exactly 16 weeks. Soaked pads. Went to A&E and finally reviewed at maternity triage as out of hours for early pregnancy assessment unit (EPU). Cervix fine, closed! Given anti-D as Rhesus - and given ultrasound next day and baby fine.

Swabs done that day stated BV query, so started metronidazole antibiotics (Took a few days for anyone to tell me this, btw!)

BUT! Started dark red blood ever since a week after the big bleed. Still having dark brown blood and it’s approximately 10 days since the big bleed and still taking antibiotics. EPU didn’t seem concerned and no repeat scan or check up has happened.

what do people make of this? I’m just over 17 weeks at time of my post. Thanks in advance x

Get a second opinion.

Get a second opinion.

This! Request a referral to a proper fetal medicine unit.

This sounds like when I had a sub chorionic hematoma. I had two major bleeds followed by weeks of spotting. It was very scary but it did resolve after 8-9 weeks and baby arrived safely a few weeks ago at nearly full term.

Thanks all! I will definitely push for a second opinion at this stage

I had a big bleed at around 11/12 weeks with my son and had an ultrasound showing all was fine with baby. The bleeding (not heavy after the initial one) continued sporadically well into the second trimester eventually easing off in the late 20s.

I had to have a c-section at 42 weeks and the surgeon said I had a small fibroid in my womb. My GP thought that might have been the cause of the bleeding. Hope all goes well for you. X

I do have fibroids but was told they weren’t too serious to cause any harm, but it’s definitely a factor to consider. I just feel frustrated that my care is very “we just don’t know, only come in if it gets worse”. It definitely seems like old blood but it just won’t stop. Every time I wipe some brown blood is there. Hard to know what’s normal. Thanks for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it

Update: finally re-reviewed at the gynaecology ward and they checked me over, including baby. Still unexplained bleeding, but cervix fine and baby was fine. Such a stressful time! Anyway, I hope whomever reads this finds the thread helpful and somewhat reassuring.

Hi! I’m going through the same thing as you at 14 and a half weeks, I’ve had an emergency scan and everything was fine but no reason given or found! How long did the brown discharge continue for you? X

Ros456 · 22/04/2024 20:53

Hi, I had a bleed at 16 weeks and all was fine. I had the brown discharge for just over 3 weeks and nothing since and am now 24 weeks

I feel like I’ve found my people!
Last week I was admitted to A&E after suffering a huge bleed while at work - I was just coming up to 17 weeks. Basic scan at A&E showed baby was still ok with a heartbeat, but couldn’t see any more detail. Examination showed cervix was closed but there was a lot of blood, so I was told to expect the bleeding to continue for a couple of days. Also given anti-D as O-.

When I was discharged I was told they’d call the next day to get me a detailed scan to look for the cause.

Didn’t hear from them at all until Friday evening when they called me booking me in for a scan on Saturday morning. Baby absolutely fine, and no visible causes of the bleeding.

The brown discharge carried on until Friday, which was actually the worst day apart from the initial bleed. Nothing since then but from reading the other posts here I now know not to worry if it starts up again.

Honestly last week felt like the worst week of my life, so worrying!

Only possible correlating factor is that my sister said the same thing happened to her when she was pregnant and it always coincided with days when she was on her feet a lot at work. Incidentally last Monday when I had my big bleed I had indeed had a really busy day at work, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some link. My work risk assessment has now been updated to say I need to be off my feet as much as possible - I’m a teacher so not the easiest thing to do!
