Abroad in Turkey/Water Infection/23 weeks pregnant

Hi, I'm 23 weeks pregnant.

I have a water infection and we're currently abroad in Turkey, due to fly back Wednesday.

Urination is very, very painful.

Normally in the UK the doctor prescribes me nitrofurantoin, which works really well.

We went to a 24 hour clinic here today.

The doctor's English wasn't very good, but he said nitrofurantoin or its Turkish equivalent aren't safe in pregnancy.

He prescribed me Aksef 500 mg as a 7 day course. I googled it, it is safe in pregnancy. I don't know if it works in a similar way to nitrofurantoin though. I'm terrified it won't work and that the infection will spread to my kidneys and that I will be severely ill in hospital here and lose the baby.

I have already considered booking a flight back home tomorrow, no matter how much it will cost.

I really regret going on this holiday and I wish I had stayed at home.

What would you do in my situation? xx

Have looked up Aksef and it is cefuroxime which is indicated for treatment of UTI and safe at any stage of pregnancy. Nitrofurantoin is generally best avoided in third trimester so he has been overly cautious not to prescribe it at 23/40. But cefuroxime will work just as well.

Take the cefuroxime as directed (should be 500mg twice daily), drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine/spicy food/acidic foods.

Hope you are feeling better soon, being abroad and poorly is horrible!
