7 weeks and brown bleeding

I’ll be 7 weeks tomorrow. For the past 2 nights I’ve had a small amount of brown stringy blood when I wipe. Today it’s still brown but slightly heavier as I noticed it in my underwear rather than just being when I wipe. It’s intermittent though - seems to stop and start.
I have to go to my GP for a speculum exam tomorrow to see if my cervix is still closed before she will refer me for a scan. Is this normal practice?
Is this likely to be a miscarriage and should I prepare myself? I’m so scared.

How worrying for you. I don't have any practical advice but as someone who has experienced bleeding in early pregnancy I remember the panic and how alone I felt and didn't want to read and run. It's just an awful feeling.

I also reached out for stories of people who had experienced similar and gone on to have a successful pregnancy and I got loads of good news stories, so hopefully you can get similar comfort from others who have been through it and had a positive outcome.

On the practical side of things, I called 111 when it happened to me and they sent me to A&E and I got a scan the same day. I was around 10 weeks pregnant.

happened to be at the beginning of my pregnancy with my twins I’ve just had went to hospital and they said it could be due to intercourse but if it’s brown or pink they said it wasn’t to worry it’s if it is red but still worth a check up

I am 5weeks and 2 days and four days ago s couple of hours after sex (about 10hours) I had very little maybe just two drops after I wiped of light brown discharge, then it has pretty much stopped sometimes after wiping there is the tiniest bit of discharge super light brown and then sometimes not. I'm on holiday and it seems that after going in the ocean for a while after I wipe and have s bit more discharge like the picture attached and then the day goes and it goes away. I had a bit of cramping the first day but nothing since, I am 23 years old so I'm a bit worried, has anyone experience this?

Hi there, I'm in the same boat as you and just wanted to commiserate. 7w3d, started getting some brown/pink discharge last night and it's been continuing today. I had a MMC last Dec so I'm terrified. Being sent for a scan tomorrow morning. I have seen tons of positive stories on here about bleeding in pregnancy so I don't think either of us need to panic right now until we know for sure.

I've not heard about the GP having to examine you with a speculum, that sounds strange. You could try phoning your EPU and explaining, they might just book you in for a scan as an emergency?

I’m 8 weeks+1 and had brown discharge / brown bleeding on and off for about two weeks from about 5 weeks+3. My GP sent me to A&E and I was then sent to the local EPU. Have had two scans since then and all is well. They seemed not to worry when I said it was brown not red…

Thanks so much everyone. Your words are so very reassuring. And to those going through similar, please feel free to vent here! It really does help to not feel so alone. However I’ve started getting awful pain in my lower left back. I’m not sure if I’ve pulled a muscle while wallpapering or if this is a likely miscarriage pain. I’ve heard pain can be in your back but does anyone know if it’s usually to the side?

Mine started about 20 hours after sex. I wonder if it could be related. Fingers crossed!

I had this around 7 weeks too. Went to hospital and they scanned and all.was OK. No cause could be found. They did a swab and called me (3 whole weeks later!) To say I'd tested positive for thrush. I had none of the usual symptoms. I prob had brown blood on and off for about 5 days then it stopped. I'm now 13 weeks and so far everything is going OK. Try not to worry too much x

Thank you :) I've been booked into my EPU tomorrow morning for an emergency scan. Unfortunately just now I had some red blood so am expecting the worst but you never know, there are reasons for the blood besides miscarriage. Still very upset though.

Call early pregnancy unit

I had red blood with my last pregnancy and it was a subchorionic haematoma in my uterus. It reabsorbed itself and my pregnancy continued fine. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you get a similar outcome. Have you had much blood? I’m glad you don’t have long to wait for an answer.

Thanks Rosie, that’s so reassuring. My bleeding is very stop/start and still small amounts and brown. Keeping fingers tightly crossed.

I had this was my pregnancy. Brown blood for the first 6 weeks. Then had a massive bright red bleed around 8 weeks and again at 10 weeks. I had scans each time (booked private as EPU was a nitemare to get through to). The bright red bleeds happened after going to the toilet TMI. I suffered terrible constipation. The bleed showed up on the scan, they showed me a tiny pool of blood beside baby but couldn't give a reason for it. Baby is now 12 weeks old and doing great

Oh no. I had a bowel movement this morning and it caused fresh red blood with a couple of clots when I wiped. Back to brown blood again straight after. Still only when I wipe. But yikes….red and clots!!!

That's what happened to me after bowel movement. There was no explanation given at scans but baby was totally fine

I know it's a really scary time , I've had it during 2 of my pregnancies. One bleeding until 15 weeks and one 22 weeks. It was either brown, pink or bright red once. It's very common and I hope everything is ok

I had the heaviest bleed ever at 8 weeks, soaked the bed (sorry tmi) and all was ok.

Was there clots too? That’s the bit that worries me most! They were quite small clots but definatley there

I had brown bleeding which turned into bright red spotting at 8 and 10 weeks and i called the EPU and got scans - everything was ok and he is now 3 months old. They said i had some fluid and blood around baby which was coming out, Wishing you the very best OP. hope all is OK

@Buttons659 yes small clots and quite a bit of blood, enough to even be in the toilet too

small update…. I went to GP, pregnancy test still positive and cervix closed. She said there was some brown discharge on my cervix but no fresh bleeding.
I now have a scan booked for 5pm today. Feeling very nervous .

UPDATE….bleeding got worse at the hospital. They asked for a pee sample and it was bright red and clotty.
They couldn’t find baby with the abdominal scanner and I was convinced it was gonna be ectopic at this point! They had to use vaginal probe, but….baby appeared with a healthy, flickering heartbeat!
im still bleeding, and it seems to be getting heavier but baby is doing well. They couldn’t find any obvious cause for the bleeding, but they did find an ovarian cyst. I
Just gotta hope the bleeding stops, but at the minute it’s all looking good in there!

Final update. Baby is gone.
i passed tissue on the sanitary pad and I know it’s the gestational sac. No doubt. I’m getting a scan tomorrow for confirmation. It’s all over. My heart is broken.
