Blood sugar levels 8.9

I am 12 weeks pregnant and had gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy, baby is less than a year old so not all that long ago.
I have an early glucose tolerance test tomorrow because I had it before, if negative they will test again at 28 weeks.
I've been feeling seriously tired, not normal tired, hit by a train tired, absolutely exhausted ! Just check my bloods and they were 8.9
This is high isn't it ? They had to be no higher than 7 when I was pregnant. Just gutted as I know now it's most likely I have gd again
Any experience ?

Was that first thing in the morning, or after eating?

An hour after food
I haven't done any fasting levels yet as not been monitoring, I only checked because of how I felt

Thanks for the reply. I already have a gtt tomorrow morning at the hospital so will find out in the next couple of days either way.
I've been feeling so so tired, and also a little drunk feeling with lightheadedness, that's what made me test as i remember feeling this way when pregnant with my dd, although it was a lot later on in pregnancy. I've also been getting breathless which I was getting before, and weeing lots

We're moving this thread to our Pregnancy topic at the OP's request.

I'd test before eating rather than after. They will be higher for up to 2 hrs after eating.

How come test before eating ?
The diabetes nurse in my last pregnancy told me to test 1 hour after meals

I had GD in my first pregnancy and then unfortunately type 2 for my second. Anything above 7.4 1 hour after eating was considered too high by my diabetic nurse. So yes you probably do but it depends what you ate.
On a positive note it’s good that it’s picked up so quickly if it is. As control throughout the pregnancy is better than just the last bit.
And obviously you will know this but sometimes it needs to be said - this is not your fault it’s just something your body does in pregnancy.

I have had gestational diabetes twice and for me it was anything over 7.8 two hours after eating. Fasting (first thing in the morning) was under 5.4.

huggiess · 09/08/2023 13:25

I thin it was 7.8 for me not 7, can't quite remember but 7.8 rings a bell!
I'm just going to keep testing today after meals.
I haven't been eating the best to be honest , I've been eating pure shit but I've been craving it, and craving sugar so bad ! Been way too tired to make things healthy which is bad I know

Good luck with your test tomorrow. 7.8 is the upper limit target for one hour after eating once diagnosed with gestational diabetes; however, for the glucose tolerance test, the 7.8 is normally the two hour upper limit for diagnosis. Not all trusts do it exactly the same though.

Have you checked your fasting levels? Normally 5.6 to diagnose, 5.3 target once diagnosed.

I think the “freestyle” glucose monitor company may be offering a free two week trial still (it’s the one that you wear for two weeks). If so, it can be very helpful for picking up trends and working out which foods work best for you as an individual. All the best.

Thank you. Yeah it will be blood test and drink, then two hour wait and another blood test.

I've got the Aga matrix blood testing machine they gave me last time, I'm guessing if I have it they'll just tell me to use that again ?

Yes I think they would give you a finger prick device for monitoring if the results indicate that. They’d probably also do that if your glucose tolerance test is clear now but there are questions about possible GDM later in your pregnancy.

In addition, some people find the monitors which are worn and give data continually for 14 days are very useful/interesting in terms of picking up triggers and trends, but they’re not usually available on the NHS which is why I mentioned there can be free trials. But absolutely not a requirement if not something you fancy.

Just check your test strips are in date.

I had a few high readings last pregnancy but was negative for GTT.

i tested about 3 months ago as wasn’t feeling to special, this was pre pregnancy and it was 8.5 or something. Did my daughter, was also high and turns out the strips had expired.

So I had the gtt this morning, they said if it's positive I'll hear back this afternoon. Heard nothing so far, hoping that means it's negative ! Thought I'd have heard something by now

Fingers crossed it’s negative! X
