Hi all,

Has anyone ever felt baby always hiccups? I’ve been observing mine and sometimes baby has hiccups 4-5x a day! I feel awful that there’s nothing I can do about it. An episode of hiccups can last anywhere from 2mins- 10mins.

in my last growth scan, baby had the hiccups too and the abdomen was just jumping.

Is too much hiccups ever a worry?

Never a worry! It’s actually a good thing. Hiccups get the hormones in the amniotic fluid all in their lungs to do final developing for birth. They also strengthen the diaphragm muscle for breathing air after birth.

Laserbeam24 · 05/08/2023 23:37

My baby did exactly the same. Nothing to be worried about. Pre warning; they'll hiccup a lot outside too! 🤣

My baby also had hiccups constantly. Strapping 10lbs 4oz (at 37 weeks) is now a very healthy 20 year old!

Phew that is such a relief to hear. I just feel so bad and think maybe I’m drinking too much water. I have been told I have Polyhydramnios too so it was playing on my mind. Thank you!!

Thank you, such a relief to hear! I think I will certainly miss the constant pulsating once baby is here!

Aww I’m glad to hear! I had a growth scan last week and baby is 6lbs at 34 weeks! The pulsating hiccups are just something else

Look out for tongue tie when baby is born!

megansmarkle · 06/08/2023 00:25

How can they hiccup when no Airbnb

megansmarkle · 06/08/2023 00:25

Air*.

Garman · 06/08/2023 08:01

Why do you feel awful about it? The baby doesn’t care if it has hiccups 🤨

PickledScrump · 06/08/2023 08:19

Very common, nothing to worry about

Al991 · 06/08/2023 09:16

Yea don’t worry mine was the exact same at 34 weeks. It’s gone down to about twice a day now at 36. I asked the midwife and they said if it’s literally all day every day then to mention it but a few bouts a day is fine :)

Toddler101 · 06/08/2023 09:19

My first had hiccups you could set your watch by daily! "Oh it must be 1030pm, baby has hiccups again..."

And for the fourth trimester too, baby still hiccuped at that same time outside of the womb 😂

NewCracker · 06/08/2023 09:38

My dd hiccuped 4-5 times a day. She was born with tongue tie and had awful reflux, and the hiccuping continued throughout the newborn phase. My midwife said it's very common and these babies can be born with gastro issues such as reflux or colic. Which my baby did.
I remember reading somewhere that it could be a sign of cord entanglement but my midwife said it is a sign but usually goes along with other signs of feral distress.

NewCracker · 06/08/2023 09:39

*fetal distress 🙄

Ratw21 · 06/08/2023 11:13

Mine hiccuped constantly too - sometimes 8 times a day! I asked various midwives as I was a bit worried and they said it was fine. Baby didn’t have any reflux/gastric issues but does still hiccup a fair bit!

youknowitIknowit · 06/08/2023 12:00

My baby hiccuped constantly. We still laugh about it, though it did used to stop me being able to sleep!

Pippinpops85 · 06/08/2023 16:54

Yes this! My little one had hiccups multiple times a day in the womb. She's now a bouncy 1 year old. She did have reflux as a newborn but apart from that totally fine

hippygirllucky · 06/08/2023 17:05

My (now 18 month old) has hiccough constantly, often multiple times a day. She's very happy and healthy and hiccoughed a lot as a newborn but barely does any more. Don't worry!!

MummaLou95 · 07/10/2023 17:06

Is it common for baby’s to get hiccups a lot while in the womb? I am currently 36+6 days and my baby seems to have regular hiccups each day which have increased more and more as each week goes on.

Porridgeislife · 07/10/2023 17:16

Another one whose baby hiccupped constantly in my uterus and had tongue tie and reflux as a newborn.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 07/10/2023 17:58

DD had it all the time in the womb. She's now in her twenties and still hiccups easily. No reflux or tongue tie.

bettynutkins · 07/10/2023 18:28

Mine both did this. Particularly my daughter. I counted 10 times once. Rang my midwife in a panic after googling (stay off Google!) She laughed at me and said it was a good thing and not to worry. It's baby practicing breathing.

Was going to say exactly this!

Pippinpops85 · 07/10/2023 20:55

My little one had hiccups constantly in the womb it was very weird to feel, baby is a perfectly wonderful, energetic toddler now although did have reflux as a newborn but it was easily managed.
