Tips to get through first trimester

Hi all, I'm 9+1 and am really, really struggling. I'm sick every day since 7wks - generally either morning or night (sometimes both) and feel constantly nauseous in between. I also have a horrid, horrid taste in my mouth that never seems to go. I'm really struggling with liquids, water is a no go mostly, for some reason hot drinks go down slightly better. I find it basically impossible to work and feel like it's a very lonely place to be especially while most people don't know about it. Cyclizine didn't help the nausea at all and so much as a whiff of ginger or mint now makes me gag. Travel bands are rubbish. The only thing that seems to help me is eating boring beige food all the time which is making me out on (non baby) weight and caused my skin to get so spotty. I cannot imagine going through this for another 3 weeks, it's hell. How do other people get through it?! Has anything helped? Any tips for work as well? How do you go on to have other kids once you know?!

Ignore the weight, there's gonna be more coming! Eat whatever you need to eat. Sniffing lemons and eating anything vinegary helped me but I suspect it's different for everyone. Go back to your GP and ask for different meds. Don't try to work - I feel less sick if I'm lying in a dark room. Remember that it will end at some point.

How does anyone have more kids? Oh, you'd be very surprised how much you forget 😂

It socks doesn't it!

Are you getting plenty of rest and fresh air? Won't fix it but definitely helped me. And it will get better. I feel noticeably better since I tipped over 12 weeks.

There are different anti sickness meds you can try. As for getting through. Do whatever you need to do. Eat the beige food, stay off the scales. Whatever you have to do. Good news is these symptoms tend to peak 9/10 weeks and then ease. So hopefully you’ll start to feel better soon. People don’t forget about the side effects of pregnancy, it’s just that your little baby at the end makes it all worth it

I found fizzy water helped. It's really hard, I absolutely hated being pregnant due to being so sick - every evening but with a steady build up during the day (yet I got so fat??) but it truly was worth it. And I don't know if it's true, but being sick is meant to be a good sign for the baby.

As others had said ignore the weight! Just eat whatever you can stomach. I really struggled in the first trimester until around 10 weeks. Ask your GP about other medications. Things that helped me were;

  • Fruity ice lollies
  • one or two strawberries cut up (don't over face yourself) or other fruit.
  • flavoured water if you can but I was the same as you I enjoyed a cup of tea
  • cereals (if you can't stomach milk just nibble on it plain, and don't try to be healthy with it just eat what you can - it was cookie crisp for me!)
  • fresh fruit juices
  • toast

I feel for you I'm 36 weeks now and was talking to DP this morning about how rough that 1st trimester was. Just take each day as it comes. I used to tell myself 'just get through today' rather than think too far ahead, it helped! Hang in there ❤️

Yes definitely taking the get through today approach- when it started and I googled to see how long it lasts and saw that I'd have another five weeks it was a real low, even the idea of 3 whole more weeks is depressing now! I'll give ice lollies a go as something I haven't tried yet! Has anyone had much experience of telling work at this point - I don't want to as it's so early (haven't told my own mum yet) but I'm managing between 2-3 hours at my desk a day which I imagine is going to be picked up sooner or later...
