Not sure why as Google says it's ok. 22 weeks pregnant and having panic attacks

You can take propranolol in pregnancy if you need to. Your doctor is being overly cautious.

My psychiatrist recommended I read this website when I got pregnant:

https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/Propranolol/

it seems to say propanolol is safe but also implies you shouldn’t start taking it in Pregnancy

If you don’t take it daily then it can’t be something you are reliant on anyway so why are you so fixated on this?

Newuname199987 · 29/07/2023 00:07

You say that we don’t know your mental health issues and yes that’s right. Your gp does though and has made a decision in the best interest of you and your baby.

‘other people have been given them’ is not relevant, other people are not you and you don’t know their full medical information just like we don’t know yours.

The only people who can make informed decisions on this are the gps of those involved, not google or those on here who you point out ‘have no idea of your issues’.

Go back and see a different gp at your practice if you’re not satisfied rather than argue with people on here who all would rather take advice from a gp who is fully trained and informed on a patients specific circumstances than argue that ‘Google says it’s ok’

It sounds like you're just going to take it anyway OP 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm pregnant and I wouldn't risk taking anything not advised by my GP or antenatal team.

I'm also a CBT therapist in an IAPT service and treat panic disorder daily.

Propranolol and other beta blockers or benzos are only a short term 'fix'. They actually cause more problems for panic disorder in the long term.

I'd put my energy into researching CBT techniques for panic disorder while you wait to be assessed. Hopefully you can be prioritised for CBT once assessed.

Ladyj84 · 29/07/2023 00:17

I took my propanalol during all 4 pregnancies nobody advised me to stop and since I only take as and when I need its not often either

Are you a doctor? And do you have OP’s notes?

They don't cause more issues in the long term. I don't have a panic disorder but this is leading to one by not being able to take anything.

Everyone is different remember

I work in this field. The responses to this post effectively telling the OP to woman up and put her baby first are dangerous. People clearly do not realise the risks that uncontrolled mental health problems can pose in pregnancy and during the perinatal period. The OP should definitely seek a second opinion so that she can take the medication she needs while receiving any extra monitoring required (eg of baby's growth).

Hermitlife · 29/07/2023 00:37

I was told to keep taking propanol along with sertraline during my last pregnancy due to anxiety and panic disorder. Maybe speak to your midwife and see if they will refer you on to the perinatal mental health team. They might be able to advise better

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 29/07/2023 00:41

OP, you could ask your GP to read this and call the helpline to get advice on your case specifically. The number is detailed in the link. UKTIS is the national service for advice on medicine use in pregnancy and they are part of UKHSA

Thanks.

I'm already getting growth scans due to bmi.

My GP has contacted the perinatal.

Can't believe how much support I'm getting whilst being pregnant.

@LittleBearPad as I've already got the medication pre pregnancy than he's basing his decision on it not being allowed for anxiety in pregnancy, there is nothing to suggest I'm at risk.

My GP told me it was one of those things where they couldn’t be sure because there’s no testing (as obviously it would be unethical to test on pregnant woman). Some people have to take it for heart conditions and nothing has been reported but not formally tested. He prescribed me but it was up to me whether I took it, I decided not to and got a lot of rescue remedy!

Don't risk your unborn baby. I'm a foster carer and the DC I'm fostering ATM has learning disability consultant said most likely caused by his birth mother taking drugs.

GoodInTheNeighborhood · 29/07/2023 02:54

I'm presuming that coming onto a forum and arguing with the responses is not good for your "anxiety".

mikikki · 29/07/2023 03:33

Did you really just make a post to argue with people? What are you wanting people to say or suggest to you?

HoppingPavlova · 29/07/2023 03:44

Again, other women have been given it

No comment on your individual situation, but this line of thought is the bane of clinicians lives.

Everyone is individual and unique, and risk/benefit is different for every individual, so something not ideal for some/most/a few people will be the most ideal option for someone else.

merrymelodies · 29/07/2023 04:46

OP, if you're convinced that you can take this medication, what's the purpose of asking random strangers with no medical qualifications on Mumsnet?

MissBattleaxe · 29/07/2023 05:08

OP you're determined to take it anyway despite the advice of a medical professional who is familiar with your notes and history. It's arrogant to assume you know better. You're also being bloody rude.

FedUpMumof10YO · 29/07/2023 05:27

🙄

Whentwobecomesthree · 29/07/2023 05:30

Your gp is probably being overly cautious. Ask your midwife for an urgent referral to see a consultant. They will have much more experience of drugs and pregnancy and how to safely take them. In my experience if the consultant advises it's ok (by letter) the gp is normally ok with things. They just want to cover themselves

WandaWonder · 29/07/2023 05:34

Well if Google says its ok it must be ok

bernieaa · 28/07/2023 22:33

It seems you have already made up your mind, so why are you on MN asking advice from a bunch of random strangers and then arguing with those who are giving you sound advice?
