Not sure why as Google says it's ok. 22 weeks pregnant and having panic attacks

If you read the leaflet it will probably advise against being used during pregnancy. Personally I don't think it's worth the risk.

bernieaa · 28/07/2023 22:34

But the doctor was happy for you to take them if you wanted to? The Beta blockers?

The doctor seems to have advised against it 🤦‍♀️

gulph · 28/07/2023 22:43

😂😂 go ahead take them!

I don't want to be mean, but after trying for a baby for 10 years and then going through ivf to be at the same stage of my pregnancy as you, I would not do anything to risk my unborn child, even if it made me feel rubbish. It would be selfish to not care about the effects it could have on you and your child, just because you've 'heard' someone else took it in pregnancy.

Prozac isn't safe in pregnancy - Pregnancy
Pregnancy
For all selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors
Manufacturers advise avoid during pregnancy unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk. There is a small increased risk of congenital heart defects when taken during early pregnancy. If used during the third trimester there is a risk of neonatal withdrawal symptoms, and persistent pulm

I don’t think you understand panic attacks if you think it just ‘makes you feel rubbish’

Is that supposed to suggest that they're safe? 😵‍💫

Your circumstances are really unfortunate and I'm glad you are getting what you want.

However you haven't read the thread - other women have been prescribed it, so why.

I find it very bizarre you think it's ok to apply your situation and thoughts to my thread, which is about my mental health.... you wouldn't be writing the same information on an abortion thread because you would be banned/post deleted.

So I guess you should stay in your lane.

'Other women have been given it' Hmm

Grow up.

Truthseeker456 · 28/07/2023 22:48

Hi op i don't think Google does say it is safe to take them. I was told to definitely not take them in pregnancy by the doctor. I definitely wouldn't risk it

Wolfiefan · 28/07/2023 22:51

Your argument that other women have been given it sounds like a child saying “but everyone else is allowed to!”
You have no idea of the figures of how many have been given it and how many of them have suffered poor outcomes.
The medical professional says don’t take it. So best not to.
PP is right. Don’t base decisions that could affect the health/life of your child on anecdotes instead of actual medical advice.

gulph · 28/07/2023 22:51

As a person who has bipolar, I am very aware of how panic attacks make you feel, however a panic attack is temporary and learning to control them is much more effective than medication. Panic attacks are not chemical, they are reactive. I take medication for my condition which my dr has deemed as safe for taking during pregnancy as long as my baby is kept in hospital for 48 hours post birth to ensure there is no withdrawal symptoms. If I had a choice, I would stop all tablets to ensure my baby is safe, however i don't have a choice but im on the safest tablets available and wouldn't dare take anything that my dr didn't support.

Cloud992 · 28/07/2023 22:55

Beta-blockers may cause intra-uterine growth restriction, neonatal hypoglycaemia, and bradycardia; the risk is greater in severe hypertension.

this is why your doctor is reluctant to prescribe this to you

urghhh47 · 28/07/2023 22:59

NHS information - propranolol is considered safe during pregnancy

Doctor won't give me Propranolol
Bababear987 · 28/07/2023 23:00

You say drs can be wrong so Maybe the other doctors who have prescribed them for pregnant woman are wrong and your doctor is correct.

They are quite obviously not safe for pregnancy and it would be irresponsible for your doctor to prescribe them and I cannot believe knowing this you would still want to take them. There are things you can do and panic attacks are temporary. Why would your risk your babies health? You can easily look up the risks of this med in pregnancy and honestly who cares about what other people have or haven't been prescribed it's of absolutely no relevance to you.

“Can affect your baby’s growth in pregnancy”

I think you misunderstood- it’s safe for breastfeeding mothers not pregnant women.

urghhh47 · 28/07/2023 23:01

however it may be the case that an ssri might be more appropriate for you right now, some of these have been well used in pregnancy and may have fewer downsides

urghhh47 · 28/07/2023 23:04

@Cloud992 can not does/will and that can be monitored if the Op really wants the beta blocker than she could take it knowing the risks but her care team would need to know. The vast majority of drugs are not tested for pregnancy and may carry some risk but for many the benefit outweighs the risk.

It can cause issues, I certainly wouldn't be taking it without medical backing and monitoring. You need to ask for referall to the antenatal mental health team and work with them to find whats best for you.

They don't treat anxiety and require medication every day.

So an occasional use is much better.

Plus SSRIs are bad for me. Never to be prescribed again.

What's this - "I have a worse mental health so therefore I can dictate what is best for you"?

You have no idea what is happening in my life. My diagnosis. Or anything.

Don't be so aggressive, op. Your medical provider has already advised what is best for you, but you're not listening, because you want it your way.
