i've just my 2nd 'dose' of leg cramp in this pgcy this a.m. as i woke - all i did was turn over from one side to the other in bed before getting up. touched my leg there was a small-ish hard lump btwn shin and calf, tightening, spasm tpye feeling. worse than the average pins and needles. absolute agony. eventually eased and then left with pulled muscle type feeling all day. and limping cos it hurts when i walk occasionally. had one back in oct half term when on hols for week. panicked thinking it was blood clot cos its never happened to me b4.

anyone else suffer? anything recommended to help it thats ok for use during pgcy.?

i had something similar when I was PG. never really took anything for it - just tried to drink more milk in case it was to do with not having enough calcium.

bananas really help

SenoraPostrophe · 13/12/2004 21:34

I had terrible cramp in my first pregnancy, but not nearly so much in the second.

I think it may have been down to the fact that I was consciously avoiding salt the first time, but not so much the second. Or possibly it was because I was doing so much running round after dd in the second preg?

KristmasBear · 13/12/2004 21:35

I remember it well, leaping out of bed and screaming with such pain my DH thought I was in labour!!! Happened to me often with first pg, not second. strange.

SenoraPostrophe · 13/12/2004 21:35

or bananas - I ate more of those the second time too!

Chuffingoodtime · 14/12/2004 09:07

I had terrible cramps tried bananas, more water, stretching, baths and the only thing that seemed to help was when I started having more milk (albeit soy)by having 3 bowls of cereal a day.

Pidge · 14/12/2004 09:46

Yup - first pregnancy I was constantly leaping out of bed shrieking in agony and hobbling around the bedroom cursing, much to the annoyance of dp! This time round I've only had cramps a few times and that was when I stopped taking my multivitamins - I don't usuallly take supplements, hoping I have a healthy rounded diet, but after the cramp episode I bought another pregnacare pack and have been fine since. Might be worth a try. Bananas also very good - I have them with natural yog for brekky at home and then a banana sandwich mid morning at work!

It is agony.....almost worse than labour! I had to bend my toes towards me and get dh to rub my calves really hard.

bakedpotatohoho · 14/12/2004 10:29

like pidge, had it badly with preg 1; this time luckier. no idea why.

what worked for me: point toes up towards knee, and push heel away from you so you feel the stretch in your calf

the worst thing to do is to ballet-point your toes, which was always my instinct. oooowwww.

bakedpotatohoho · 14/12/2004 10:30

just read all the posts. interesting that it seems less likely to strike 2nd time around.

catgirl · 14/12/2004 10:33

one glass of tonic water before bed really helped me - to do with the quinine (sp?) in it I am told (cramps are a symptom of malaria). My mum has been suffering with leg cramps (not pg related ones!) and her doc told her the same.

charlie95 · 14/12/2004 14:32

my mum has that too and she suggested the tonic water stuff but we werent sure if it was suitable during pgcy.

went and bought bananas specially, today. i do hate them though. perhaps i'll find a nice recipe from baby food books to help me eat them!!!!

charlie95 - I have the reverse problem - I am a banana addict - I have eaten 3 so far today! I started with banana and pear in natural yogurt (for brekky) then a banana sandwich, then a banana on its own! What about baked banana with ice cream, or my fave thing ever, banana poached in sweetened coconut milk (a Thai thing!), or banana bread and butter pudding.

Frankly, if I didn't like the things though, I'd try tonic water, vitamin supplements and other things first!

I was just about to start this thread!!!

help!
dont know what i sdid to eleviate this last time round.......
but my claf muscles are killing e today

DingWongMerrilyOnHigh · 14/12/2004 14:59

Has anyone mentioned Clarins Lourdes Jambes fluid yet? The green menthol stuff that feels gloriously cool and tingley and really does the job if you put it on just before bed.

Put it on your Xmas list and do yourself a favour

sweetheart · 14/12/2004 15:00

This was the worst part of being pregnant for me - the cramps were agony.

I'm so glad to hear it's not so bad 2nd time round!! I was dreading the latter stages of this pregnancy for this very reason!!!

popsycal · 14/12/2004 15:01

oooh it is just as bad second tome round for me

DingWongMerrilyOnHigh · 14/12/2004 15:03

second time round was bad for me too
